10 Pieces We Really Want From The New TOM FORD Collection

Mr Tom Ford’s had a singular goal for his latest collection: to make clothes that put a smile on your face. After assuming that the style world would go into what he called “hibernation” this season, the designer decided to look ahead and forecast the type of clothes we’ll all want to be wearing once normality resumes.

That “light at the end of the tunnel” mode of dressing comes in two forms. First, through opulent, indulgent fabrics – hits of cashmere, suede and nubuck – and second, via attention-grabbing prints (particularly of the floral kind) and razor-sharp tailoring. All told, it’s mightily refreshing: a dose of comforting optimism to cheer us through the last hurdle. Here are 10 pieces to add to your post-pandemic wardrobe.

01.

The versatile sneakers

We’ve been trying to think of a scenario (or, rather, outfit) for which TOM FORD’s classic Cambridge sneakers wouldn’t be appropriate and – other than, perhaps, swimming or serious physical exertion – we can’t think of one. The platonic ideal of a luxury sneaker, it works equally well with denim or a suit. Speaking of…

02.

The slim-fit suit

With its slim fit, sharp peak lapels and ticket pocket, this suit jacket is unmistakably the work of Mr Tom Ford. The fit, the designer’s signature O’Connor block, was worn by Mr Daniel Craig in both Spectre and Skyfall. If it’s good enough for Bond, well…

03.

The cashmere sweater

Not even the blazing sunshine can tear a stylish man away from a fuzzy knit – just ask Mr Nicholas Hoult’s character in Mr Ford’s directorial debut, A Single Man. We highly doubt it’s a coincidence that this fluffy cashmere sweater looks uncannily similar to the scene-stealing one Hoult dons in the movie.

04.

The workwear trousers

The design brief for these trousers? We expect it was something along the lines of: “take a pair of utility-style workwear pants and make them office-friendly”. Tailored from hard-wearing cotton-twill, they’re cut in a smart, slim fit with a neat waistband and practical buttoned back pockets, underlining TOM FORD as a brand that occupies that space between dressy and casual like no other.

05.

The gilet 2.0

A gilet is one of the style world’s great dividers, but even its most ardent detractor could hardly deny its practical merits. Its admirers will surely also recognise that this one – with its butter-soft suede exterior and smooth leather trims – is among its most refined variations.

06.

The sporty sneakers

Mr Tom Ford breaking a sweat? Surely not. Though, if he was to work out to the point of perspiring, you can bet he’d be doing it in sneakers as sleek as these. Crafted in Italy from mesh, nylon and neoprene, this black and white version is exclusive to MR PORTER.

07.

The summery backpack

Though classic in design, TOM FORD’s backpacks have become instantly recognisable – the chunky zip and hardware are the giveaway. This patterned leather version is certainly bold, but not loud, thanks to the monochrome colour palette.

08.

The short swim shorts

This year, dress for the holiday you deserve. While a tropical getaway might be precarious, you can at least act like you’re padding around a beachside paradise in these camo swim shorts (and get the tan to match). Being confined to your back garden never looked so good.

09.

The ultimate white jeans

Are white jeans the easiest item to pull off? No. But your efforts will be well worth it when you get it right. Particularly in the summertime. This Japanese selvedge pair are cut in the shape of chinos, so they’re a touch smarter than most.

10.

The shearling trucker

It’s hard to describe this jacket as anything other than thoroughly TOM FORD. It’s the sort of piece that epitomises the American designer’s sartorial oeuvre. A luxury update to a classic trucker, it’s been crafted in Italy from suede as smooth and soft as cashmere with a neat shearling collar.
