The Tribes: Which Sunglasses Suit Your Face Shape Best?

The sun’s out, so why the long face? Probably because you’ve got the wrong sunglasses. You see, more than keeping the glare – not to mention harmful UV rays – out of your eyes, sunnies can set the tone of your whole look. Your shades will probably be the first thing that other people notice about your appearance this summer and are therefore an easy way for you to add character. The question is: what kind of character do you want that to be?

To our mind, the trick is making the most of the face you’ve been blessed with. Below, five typical face shapes and the sunglasses to suit them. Throw shade? We’d rather complement what you’ve already got.

01.

Mr Square Face

It’s hip to be square – from Mr Brad Pitt to Mr Henry Cavill, a strong, broad jawline is something of a Hollywood ideal for a man. But it can make buying sunglasses tricky. Anything too edgy or sharp will look blocky, so think outside the box. Rounded or curved frames will add an extra dimension to your chiselled features.

02.

Mr Round Face

Rather than going round and round, let’s square the circle. By which we mean that if your profile is curved like Messrs Leonardo DiCaprio or Kanye West, you should avoid round sunglasses that mimic it. Angular frames will help lengthen your mug, while a pair that’s wider than it will make you appear slimmer. Sunnies that contrast with your face shape will add definition.

03.

Mr Diamond Face

Let’s get straight to the point: defined cheekbones give you a lot to play with. If you’re cut like Mr Timothée Chalamet, retro and rectangular frames, say your classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers, are a good place to start. From there, experiment with colours and details, but don’t go too far – extreme curves or angles can put your face out of whack. Otherwise, shine on, you crazy diamond.

04.

Mr Oblong Face

Long story short, a rectangular fizzog calls for strong frames to balance out your narrower proportions. Think thick rims with bold lines. Or aviators will work, as demonstrated by Mr Tom Cruise in Top Gun; the teardrop shape should accentuate your robust features.

05.

Mr Oval Face

With that face, you’re probably used to the compliments. Well, here’s another – when it comes to sunglasses, yours is also the most versatile shape. From oversized bug eyes to tiny Matrix specs, if you’ve got a profile like Mr Ryan Gosling, there’s nowhere you can’t go. One word of advice: avoid arms that sit too low or they’ll give you a hang-dog look.
