THE JOURNAL

Our edit of the new spy-inspired collection.
Though the original MR PORTER Kingsman collection may have taken inspiration from the world of the gentleman spy – conceived as a costume wardrobe for Mr Matthew Vaughn’s hugely successful 2014 spy movie Kingsman: The Secret Service– it was designed to meet the real-world needs of the modern man. And that’s no different with the raft of new Kingsman products that arrive on site today. So don’t expect to pick up a new pair of shoes fitted with a retractable blade fitted into the toe cap… or a suit fitted with a bullet-proof lining. Just expect exceptional clothes, made exceptionally well – with the help of esteemed designers such as George Cleverley and Drake’s. Whether you’re in the market for spring pieces, or some long-term investment items – find out more, below.
THE SHOES
If we’re to believe a popular saying, nothing says more about a man than his shoes. Not the size of his watch, the colour of his shirt or the knot in his tie. A pair of top-quality, well-shined shoes are the foundation upon which all else is built. And it’s for this very reason that we enlisted the help of George Cleverley to design our range of quintessentially British shoes. His reputation as a shoemaker to the great and good is well documented: Sir Winston Churchill, Mr Laurence Olivier and Mr Alexander McQueen are all on the brand’s illustrious roll-call of former clients (the lasts taken from the former two still proudly hang in the company’s workshop in London’s Royal Arcade, while Sir Winston’s is in storage). The brand’s Oxford shoes in chocolate calfskin leather will look smart skimming the hem of navy tailoring, while a pair of their blue suede loafers are a smart choice (sans socks) when the summer finally arrives.
THE ACCESSORIES
The few formal environments where men are still expected to dress in a suit and tie offer little opportunity for self-expression. In an office, or at a black-tie event, it’s hard to find ways to stand out, but there is an inventory of traditional accessories that are as relevant now as they’ve ever been. Add some gravitas to your outfit – and distinguish yourself from an office full of corporate drones – with a silk woven tie in teal by Drake’s or the brand’s silk pocket square with a navy trim. Whether your mission is a perilous undercover adventure or a date with danger, remember gentlemen, that the devil is always in the detail.
THE TAILORING
Summer is almost upon us, so it’s time to put aside tweed, wool and corduroy and embrace the lightweight, breathable fabrics that will keep you chilled, but still sartorially fulfilled. This navy seersucker suit jacket, called Harry’s, will help you breeze through the warmer months that lie ahead. Chest accentuating, waist slimming and finished with peak lapels, it is an uncompromisingly masculine wardrobe component that’s best saved for more formal environments. You might be tempted to add a bow tie and a straw panama – seersucker is nothing if not an invitation to indulge in other classic components – but we’d advise keeping it more mod and less costume party with the aid of this simple white shirt by Royal Warrant holder Turnbull & Asser.
