What’s New: A Brilliant Suit By MAN 1924

Words by Mr Ashley Clarke

“It is no longer unthinkable to wear lululemon pants to the office,” announced The Wall Street Journal last week. In an article about men ditching suits as their companies dial down their once formal dress codes into something far more casual, the business-minded organ relayed that dressing for the office is a sartorial free for all where anything goes – apparently even sweatpants. It went on to report that the men’s suit market in the US has shrunk by 8 per cent in the past four years. Which begs the question: why would anyone wear a suit?

Hold onto your tie pins and cufflinks, however: the suit isn’t dead just yet. Goldman Sachs might exert an influence on economic matters, but it is not, generally (and somewhat mercifully), a bellwether of what is going on in menswear. The suit, while diminishing in number in offices around the world, is enjoying a fruitful renaissance on the menswear runways. While we can’t predict whether this will mean an ushering of them back into the office, it’s undeniable that there’s anything smarter a man can wear than a suit.

And, as luck would have it, we have a rather brilliant one landing on MR PORTER today from MAN 1924, a Spanish heritage label that has built a reputation on casual yet elegant suiting, at the centre of which is its Kennedy jacket. The items you can see below – linen, unstructured, slim-fit and suave – all come with matching trousers, and will see you through everything from breezy summer weddings in Italy to stuffy meetings on Wall Street. You can, of course, pair them with lululemon sweatpants if you wish. The beauty of the suit in 2019 is that how you wear it is entirely up to you.
