What’s New: A Gold Ring To Rule Them All (Hearts, That Is)

Words by Mr Jim Merrett

3 February 2021

Say it with flowers, they say, although notably with words not with flowers. Perhaps a ring? Even better. Or, since both well-intentioned foliage and jewellery are popular methods of imparting your affection for someone, why not combine the pair (call it a two-for-one deal)?

That might be the thinking behind this effort from GOOD ART HLYWD, a 22-karat gold men’s ring featuring openwork rosettes. And, sure, while it’s covering all bases, as mentioned above, it’s also the brand’s signature motif, so there’s that.

GOOD, yep; ART, uh-huh, got it; HLYWD, wait – what? No, it’s not a particularly bad hand in Scrabble (or a particularly good one if you’re playing the Welsh edition), but Hollywood with the vowels removed. And a consonant. Indeed, the brand’s founder, Mr Josh Warner, began his career fashioning jewellery in Venice Beach – which isn’t Hollywood, we’ll admit, but isn’t far, give or take the traffic, and as a location doesn’t really lend itself to truncation – in the early 1990s before setting up his own foundry from nothing. (Even assembling his own tools and equipment.) Having garnered a cult following amid the city’s body piercing scene, Mr Warner now brings his love of mid-century machinery and a punk rock attitude to fine jewellery. Which is to say the brand makes fancy things while also eschewing “the pretence of fancy things”.

Not that the intended recipient (and that could be you) needs to know all that: “I love you” will suffice.
