THE JOURNAL

“Alright stop, collaborate and listen,” exclaimed Mr Rob Van Winkle, better known as Vanilla Ice, over the opening bars of his “Under Pressure”-sampling 1990 hit “Ice Ice Baby”. While we’re not at liberty to discuss his role in the cultural appropriation of black music for a white audience, the ramifications of copyright infringement or even his part in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze, we will grudgingly admit that Mr Van Winkle was onto something with this gambit. Not so much the stopping, and certainly not the listening – we’ve all heard that song too many times already – but collaborating we can get with. But not in the, “We’ll just pinch a bassline from Queen and Mr David Bowie – they’ll never notice” kind of way (spoiler: they – or at least their lawyers – did), but a proper heads-together joint venture that builds on the best of two parties. A two-parties party, if you will.
The good news is that plenty of our friends are also up for such an alliance. Take Venetian staples specialist Incotex and Japanese technical doyen nanamica. Both are available independently on MR PORTER, but here the former has melded minds with the latter, like Mr Spock in Star Trek (not to be confused the Vulcan nerve pinch, which offers differing results). The outcome: a quilted down jacket and gilet that play to both brand’s strengths. Slim fit while stuffed with performance-level insulation (thank you, Kodenshi ceramic fibre), each is a smart choice to keep you warm this winter.
Elsewhere, serial collaborator Mr Junya Watanabe has taken on a stone-cold classic: the New Balance 990 running shoe. This game-changing sneaker debuted in 1982, drawing on advanced technology and set at a price point that shifted what was expected of athletic footwear. Almost four decades on, its latest incarnation landed earlier this year, as sure-footed as ever. In Mr Watanabe’s hands, you’d expect some blue-sky thinking applied, or at the very least some vivid colours, but his touch here is refreshingly light. The two pairs of suede and mesh shoes come in surprisingly subdued hues – a two-tone blue/navy colourway and a white and cream iteration that is positively angelic.
Finally, bleeding edge LA skatewear label Palm Angels has turned to MR PORTER Style Council Member Mr Pharrell Williams (although, to be fair, you might know him for other, dare we say lesser, achievements) and teamed up with Billionaire Boys Club offshoot ICECREAM. This capsule collection features loopback sweats, pastel pink leisurewear and trucker caps emblazoned with logos including ICECREAM’s goofy/spooky “Cones and Bones” crest. In all, many scoops of flavour and none of them vanilla (apologies, Mr Van Winkle).
