The Coats And Jackets To See You Right Through To Spring
A good coat is one of those things that you don’t know how much you need until you really know how much you need it. Far too many times we’ve made it through December in our autumn jackets spruced up with a few well-chosen layers, then January hits and suddenly we remember what proper cold feels like.
Or, at the other end, thinking ahead and investing in a super-insulated winter coat, only to be taken by surprise when temperatures edge above freezing and we find ourselves slowly melting on the Tube in our own personal feather-filled sauna. But, don’t despair, there is still time to add to your outwear arsenal – and if you pick wisely, you can even find something that will stick with you right into spring.
The Moncler Genius technical down jacket
Moncler Genius is the Italian outerwear giant’s ongoing collaborative project, in which it invites contemporary designers to reimagine classic skiwear through their own unique vision. This quilted down jacket, with its detachable hooded shearling liner that can just as easily be worn alone, is the work of Mr Matthew Williams’ 1017 ALYX 9SM, and features the brand’s signature rollercoaster belt buckle across the throat.
The Loro Piana double-breasted cashmere coat
Looking for something a little more office appropriate? This superbly soft cashmere double-breasted number from Loro Piana is a timeless silhouette. Combined with its incredible craftsmanship and versatile but ever so slightly unexpected maroon hue, this investment piece is sure to become a trusted heirloom. And, don’t worry about the practicalities of cashmere when combined with rain – it’s been treated with the brand’s specially developed water-repellent technology.
The TOM FORD suede shearling jacket
For a slightly more lightweight option, try this mottled blue suede jacket from TOM FORD. The quilted lining and shearling collar mean it’ll still keep you well insulated on cold days, but with the shorter length and boxy workwear shape, it can also be worn open over a T-shirt or light knit towards the end of the season.
The CELINE HOMME varsity bomber
Another handy transitional weather layer, this mohair bomber jacket from CELINE HOMME is exclusive to MR PORTER. The loose fit allows for thick layers (we vote for a hoodie), while the slightly longer cut than is standard on a bomber keeps things feeling fresh and directional. We wouldn’t expect anything less.
The Manastash convertible coat
Japanese outdoor brand Manastash is inspired by the terrain and pastimes of the Pacific Northwest, with a focus on planet-friendly materials. Its Mana-65 parka-style coat features a removable padded gilet, providing multiple options for wear depending on the weather or your mood. Zip ventilation and adjustable drawstrings give further versatility. Perfect for all your favourite outdoor activities.
The Mr P. shearling jacket
The surest way to stay warm? Dress like a teddy bear. This extra cosy jacket by Mr P. is crafted from premium thick shearling in a classic camel tone that will see you through these last dark and gloomy weeks. And, as with all our own-label designs, it comes with tailor-made care and styling notes to help you make the most of your clothes.
The oversized Bottega Veneta padded gilet
While gilets are certainly handy layers to be slipped under loose coats, they can be the star of the show, too. Take this chunky option from Bottega Veneta – its extra-large quilting in the brand’s braided weave pattern gives it a real duvet feeling, only enhanced by the thick padded collar. It will make getting out of bed in the morning that little bit easier.
