How I Get Up: The CEO
MR PORTER wakes up with Mr Lewis Alexander, CEO of his own renowned consulting firm.
In the second instalment of our series exploring the morning routines of successful men, we ask LA-based Mr Lewis Alexander, CEO and founder of Lewis Alexander Executive Search, how he prepares for the busy day ahead. A leading consulting firm that specialises in “helping brands to stay relevant” by matching creative teams with CEOs, Lewis Alexander was set up in 2009, in the middle of the financial crisis. Mr Alexander, a member of our Style Council who lives in the West Hollywood Hills, has been hailed by the press as “fashion’s kingmaker” because he has been influential in the success of brands such as Alexander McQueen and Saint Laurent. Here’s how he gets up.
I have a routine, and I’m an early bird.
I wake up at 5.45am every day, and the first thing I do is have a super-cold shower. I like to use Aesop products and I light a Byredo candle. I use Kiehl’s moisturiser with SPF in it.
Then, I’ll either go on a hike or surf before work.
I surf in Venice or Malibu and hike in either Runyon Canyon or Griffith Park. In the car on the way, I’ll blast some Frankie Knuckles or something very loud and aggressive. I like the Apple Radio house music channel, too. If I’m pushed for time, I exercise at Equinox in West Hollywood, which is entertaining in terms of the clientele. Put it this way, a few of the ladies’ lips arrive 10 minutes before they do. It’s great fun.
After I get home, I have another shower.
I’m a terrible cook, but if I do make my own breakfast it’s scrambled eggs with broccoli and either chicken or smoked salmon.
In terms of what I wear, it’s fairly uniform.
From the bottom up, it’s usually Common Projects trainers or a pair of Berlutis. Then either slim jeans or a pair of Lanvin tuxedo trousers, which I’ve had for about five years – I can’t seem to get rid of them. And then a blazer or jumper.
I usually have an 8.30am meeting…
…either with somebody in Europe on the phone, or breakfast at the Chateau Marmont or Sunset Tower, generally with a designer or a CEO. I order a Pipe Cleaner juice [green apple, lemon and ginger] by Juice Served Here. Sunset Tower does a protein omelette, which is egg whites with chicken and asparagus. And I order lots of coffee.
My main trick to make waking up easier is vitamin IV drips.
I get them done every week. They keep me energised and they detox, which aids good sleep. I get those done at Earthbar. David Beckham’s always in there for a smoothie.
