Setting new year resolutions has become a challenge in itself, let alone sticking to them. Nonetheless, January is indeed a time of new beginnings and reinvention; the opportunity to reflect on the past 365 days and devise some sort of plan of what we’d like to do – or who we’d like to be – for the next.

To keep you company along the annual journey of self-discovery, we’ve asked London-based music curator and DJ Errol – founder of club night, NTS Radio staple, record label, concert series and music incubator studio Touching Bass – to put together the ultimate sounds of renewal for our Spotify channel. “For me, a new year playlist needs to have an underlying uplifting energy,” he says. “There’s an understated, but dynamic undertone across these 30 tunes – perfect whether you’re still taking January easy or mustering up the motivation to crack open your Gmail.

“I feel like pacing and timbre is key as we shift through these songs,” Errol adds. “We fly from soul and Brazilian jazz through to reggae and dub, still with that high-spiritedness and positivity tying it all together. In the second half, it’s groovy house, upbeat funk, jungle and other higher tempo numbers to get us up and motivated. Hopefully this collection of some old favourites, new finds and absolute riddims will help you to get through. Happy new year everyone – here’s to good health, realised dreams and ample rest.
