THE JOURNAL

There’s no substitute for the joy you felt as a child tearing open presents on Christmas morning. Falling in love, becoming a father, watching your team win the league… Sure, they’re all great. But do they really compare to finding a Nintendo 64 under the tree in 1998? No, we’ll be chasing that dragon until the day we die. Until then, unwrapping one of these – our hand-picked selection of hype-worthy holiday gifts – might just come a close second. From the latest designer streetwear collaborations and must-have sneakers to cutting-edge tech and homeware, here are the gifts that are on our Wish List this year.
For the collector

Undercover x Medicom’s terrifyingly cool hamburger lamp has been the subject of speculation in the MR PORTER office for several months and whisperings of its imminent arrival became cacophonous in recent weeks. And with good reason. First released in 2002, the latest model has landed at MR PORTER in the original “natural” colourway along with an exclusive black iteration in celebration of the Japanese brand’s 25th anniversary. In streetwear circles, it’s regarded as one of the most elusive collectables around, so it’d be wise to snap one up sharpish.
For the sneakerhead

Mr Virgil Abloh just gets sneakers. That much was evident when he put his own spin on 10 of Nike’s iconic pairs in 2017. Proving he’s got the chops to carry the trail sneaker trend, he released the Off-White Odsy-1000 earlier this year to a chorus of unanimous approval from sneakerheads. The latest colourway features softer tones of tan, taupe and blue that will see you through to spring.
For the streetwear connoisseur

Not everyone on your nice list will be in the market for a silver backpack. But not everyone can pull one off. If you’ve ever heard your intended recipient drop the words “Palm Angels” into conversation or spotted the brand’s gothic skater-inspired logo about his person, you can be fairly certain you’ve got a streetwear aficionado on your hands, and it’ll go down a storm.
For the house-proud

Whether it’s producing a Clockwork Orange-themed collection or an array of stylish knick-knacks, Japanese brand Undercover (see the burger lamp, above) has a real talent for triggering our covetous tendencies. Did we think we’d be including an apple-shaped clock in our letter to Santa? No. Do we need an apple-shaped clock? Also no. But that is not to say we don’t think it’ll look lovely perched on our bedside tables.
For the audiophile

What do you get when you cross one of the world’s elite camera specialists with its audio equivalent? A pair of superb headphones, that’s what. As punchlines go, it’s not our wittiest, but audiophiles with an eye for aesthetics aren’t the sort to jest when it comes to the quality of their listening experience. A collaboration between Master & Dynamic and Leica, these headphones are inspired by the latter’s Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 aspherical lens, touted as the world’s fastest, and engineered with custom components and noise-isolating technology.
For the logo lover

As hype brands go, Billionaire Boys Club (BBC for short) takes one of the top spots. Founded by American singer Mr Pharrell Williams and Japanese fashion designer Nigo in 2005, it’s arguably the brand responsible for making streetwear mainstream. It’s not enough that its friendly astronaut mascot has taken over our wardrobes. We’re now hoping it’ll have pride of place in our homes, too, in the shape of this lambswool rug.
For the well-groomed gent

Having earned himself the moniker Godfather of Harajuku, it stands to reason that anything Mr Hiroshi Fujiwara bottles and sells will, well, sell. The excellent thing about retaW, the grooming brand he founded in 2009 with Mr Daisuke Murakami, is that its products deliver. This handy tube of solid scent is our latest fixation. Stocking-sized it might be, but a little goes a long way.
