THE JOURNAL

It’s appropriate that the most famous Gen X film about stag parties is called The Hangover. Back then, an entire generation of gentlemen expected to jet off to foreign climes and test the limits of their livers whenever their peers popped the question.
Now it seems, the party is over. A recent survey by tour operator First Choice found that 69 per cent of Millennial and Gen Z men actively dread the prospect of booze-fuelled “boys’ holidays”, with more than half routinely making up excuses to avoid them. Gone is a thirst for excessive alcohol and hangovers that make your hair hurt – replaced by a hunger for cultural immersion, shared experiences and elevated cuisine.
If you’re part of the growing majority looking for more rewarding group trips, here’s our pick of the best luxury adventures for men who prefer to remember what they did the night before…

01. Surfing in Costa Rica
There are countless surf schools in Costa Rica, but none quite like Surf Synergy, which prides itself on pairing world-class wellness with world-class Pacific coast waves. Set up for mixed ability groups, the retreat has access to six beaches around the lively town of Jacó, while its luxurious, light-filled bungalows can be booked in blocks or as a complete buyout. From the moment you land they’ll provide everything, from airport transfers to healthy meals, pre-surf breathwork to post-surf massages. If you’re looking to relax and recharge with friends in paradise, you’d be hard-pressed to beat this epic slice of pura vida.

02. Dude ranching in Wyoming, US
It doesn’t get much more rugged than Darwin Ranch, a 160-acre dude ranch three hours’ drive from Jackson Hole. Surrounded by national forest for miles in every direction, it’s been hosting guests for nearly a century and offers an ideal rustic-luxe bolthole for any urban posse. Drawing inspiration from East African safari lodges, the all-inclusive homestead can host up to 18 guests at once, with activities ranging from guided horseback riding and fly-fishing to wild swimming and wood-fired sauna sessions. Gourmet farm-to-table fare keeps you fuelled throughout, while the comfy rocking chairs on the porch are never far away.
03. Golfing in the Himalayas
If you’re hoping to take your golf to a higher level, look no further than this epic group trip to the Himalayas. A five-day loop through Nepal’s most spectacular courses and cultural sites, Golfing the Himalayas is an ideal retreat for your favourite foursome. Not only will you be playing legendary courses such as Kathmandu’s Gokarna Forest Resort and Pokhara’s canyon-walled Himalayan Golf Course, you’ll also be enjoying a genuine taste of life in the Everest foothills. Beyond the greens, your itinerary will be packed with visits to Unesco World Heritage sites such as the breathtaking Boudhanath Stupa and the sprawling Pashupatinath Temple, while accommodation is at the fabled Dwarika’s Hotel in Kathmandu.

04. Woodland immersion in the Peak District, UK
The charming Victorian country house of Wildhive Callow Hall, in Derbyshire and on the edge of the Peak District, recently launched its Wild Escape group getaway. It’s a 24-hour nature retreat that blends hiking, wild swimming and e-biking with high-end woodland dining – imagine a chef-prepared feast of flame-grilled dishes, served in a picturesque woodland glade. At the end of a long day living out your Robin Hood fantasies, you and your band of Merry Men will then settle in for the night at the Woodland Hive – a well-appointed luxury cabin in the forest.
05. Fly camping in Zambia
Group safaris can be the ultimate bonding experiences – and fly camping is the perfect way to pack even more into a trip to the bush. Based in a light tented camp, you hike each day to a new location, while your equipment follows. Not only does this mean you experience the wilderness in a more intimate and immersive way together, but it also gives you better odds of spotting the Big Five on the shorter trips favoured by busy guests. The Luxury Safari Company offers a consummate four-day fly camping package to Zambia’s Lower Zambezi – one of the continent’s best safari regions, where you can also boat and fish on the Zambezi, between game drives.

06. Adventure sports in the Swiss Alps
Well-heeled Gstaad in southwestern Switzerland might not seem an obvious choice for a lads’ summer holiday, but its most famous hotel, Le Grand Bellevue, is out to change that. An Escape to the Alps is the palatial property’s new adventure package for male groups, including epic hikes and paragliding flights to whiskey tastings and specialised men’s facials. Throw in paddleboarding on Lake Arnen and an Alpine drive in Sir Roger Moore’s old Bentley S3 and you have a weekend worthy of James Bond himself.

07. Cycling in Italy
Whether you’re a fan of the Giro d’Italia or not, there’s no denying that Italy is home to some of the world’s finest road cycling. Specialist tour operator A’qto offers groups of friends the chance to experience some of these spectacular routes in style – pairing the physical challenge with luxury accommodation, great food and plenty of opportunities for bonding. There are multiple tours on offer, from Piedmont all the way down to Sicily, with each offering different difficulty levels and opportunities for cultural immersion.
