Everything you need to pack for a short-haul trip.
Yes, it’s nice to head off to a sun-soaked vista with an enormous Bottega Veneta suitcase stuffed full of absolutely everything you might need for, from a selection of trashy crime novels to a beach towel, Bluetooth speaker and more. But there’s also plenty of pleasure to be derived from putting together a perfectly composed bag of the short-haul variety. And of course, from skipping off the plane straight to the taxi rank, leaving all lesser beings in your wake, scrabbling at the luggage carousel. What a carry on, eh? Scroll down to discover our pick of the items you won’t want to take flight without.
The travel essentials
We wish that this plane of reality was one in which every travel destination was well-stocked with a selection of decent cosmetics. The reality is that the universe is cruel and hotels invariably fill their bathrooms with bottles of cheap, over-perfumed “hair and body wash” that give you a rash and leaves you smelling like lemon sherberts. Avoid having to resort to them by slipping the essentials kit from Malin + Goetz into your in-flight bag – the Grapefruit Face Cleanser and oil-free Vitamin E Face Moisturizer will help you battle dry, tired skin as you fly, and the Bergamot Body Wash, Peppermint Shampoo and Cilantro Hair Conditioner will be a godsend once you land. Add a smart Smythson travel wallet in which to stash all your currency, and you’ll be guaranteed to hit the ground running (and remarkably fresh).
The “Do Not Disturb” kit
However long your flight may be, a good, noise-cancelling pair of headphones, in combination with an eye mask, will clearly broadcast the message that no, you don’t see this whole thing as some sort of aerial social club, and no, you don’t want to engage in a long conversation about where the person sitting next to you is coming from or going to. Of course, you could also look at this in a less antisocial light: closing your eyes and listening to music is simply relaxing – a perfect way to make time fly on board. Either way, a short spell with Master & Dynamic’s MH40 headphones should convince you they’re an absolutely necessary companion at 30,000 feet.
The landing gear
What’s more, airplanes seem to have a brilliant consistency at being either too hot or too cold. We would recommend, therefore, that your carry-on contains a lightweight (but not too crease-able) jacket, such as this denim example from A.P.C., to help you adjust to different temperatures. A selection of T-shirts will always come in handy too – slipping a fresh one on just before you land is a good way to rid yourself of the plane sweats and shake off that general feeling of grogginess you get after being stuffed inside a floating metal box for a few hours.
