THE JOURNAL

We’ve teamed up with auction house Phillips and The Rake magazine to provide the outfits you need to go with the finest vintage watches.
There’s more than a little overlap between the worlds of luxury watches and men’s fashion. They appeal to similar desires. They share the same values of craftsmanship, quality and timeless design. It’s not unreasonable to assume that a man who cares about watches might also care about suits or shoes, and vice versa. At MR PORTER, we’ve long considered a good watch to be a key element of a stylish outfit.
Despite this, though, collaborative efforts between these two industries to reach a shared audience have been few and far between. All of which makes “Styled”, an upcoming watch auction organised by Phillips in partnership with MR PORTER and our friends at The Rake, something special indeed.
Rather than arranging auctions according to watch-specific categories, as is generally the case at such events, Phillips – led by Mr Aurel Bacs, the man who sold the world’s most expensive watch – has organised its 120 watches into 12 themes, each corresponding to a stylish moment in a man’s life. For each theme, MR PORTER and The Rake have devised an outfit to suit.
This innovative auction is set to take place on Wednesday 5 December at Phillips’ New York auction house, and all of the outfits will be on display in the neighbouring gallery as a series of interactive vignettes from 30 November. Check out a preview of two of them here, and come back on 8 November to see all of them – and the watches they’re designed to be worn with – in a special feature in The Journal.
