As loving gestures go, the initials “R” and “K” carved into stone above the doorway make this Elizabethan (the first one) manor house near Gatwick Airport one of England’s most romantic spots – this grand residence was a gift from local forge owner Mr Richard Infield to his wife Ms Katherine Compton. It probably also won’t be a surprise to note that Mr William Robinson later lived here – the renowned Irish landscape gardener has left his mark on the grounds. Now a lavish hotel, the in-house restaurant comes with a Michelin star. But then you might just want to hunker down in the bay-window seat in your room and admire your surroundings.
