The Standard group’s first hotel outside the US is an exercise in architectural imagination. The former town hall, a brutalist lump opposite King’s Cross station, has been transformed into a typically offbeat bolthole for open-minded party people. It comes with a strong 1970s theme, in keeping with the building, which means groovy details designed to make you smile. The ground-floor Double Standard cocktail bar is a scene most evenings and stays friendly, despite the blatant hipness. Head to the rooftop for chef Mr Peter Sanchez-Iglesias’s live-fire cooking and late-night views over London.
