The Sneaker Drop: August’s New Releases From Nike And Adidas

Words by Mr Jim Merrett

1 August 2022

This month’s Sneaker Drop was compiled in the languid dog days of high summer, and an especially hot one at that, so forgive us if we allow ourselves to drift a little. On a cheery inflatable on an ice-cool swimming pool in a well-tended Tuscan estate, preferably. Thoughts of slipping into slides, let alone socks and tennis shoes, are a step too far right now. Thoughts of sipping something with a cocktail umbrella in it, however… But because it’s you – and because we still have a job to do, even now – we’ve compiled a clutch of the releases to look out for this August. And, unlike us, in that frigid waterhole, don’t expect them to hang about. Get them while they’re/it’s hot.

Orketro by adidas Originals

Clearly, adidas has taken something from its recent string of collaborations with high-end fashion brands. And while the Orketro has big Balenciaga energy, it also has the designer Mr Kiko Kostadinov’s efforts for ASICS as a reference point. A merger of 1990s athletics aesthetics and those of a distant future, it features asymmetrical overlays and adiPrene cushioning. And, as is often the case, the silhouette is at its most striking in a white colourway.

Air Force 1 “Since 82” Low Retro by Nike

For those who approach birthdays with apprehension, Nike’s OG basketball shoe is a lesson in embracing your age. So, while the Air Force 1 marks its big 4-0, in the years since 1982 – the proud moniker of this shoe – the flagship model has stayed true to itself and never been anything less than culturally relevant. There are those who tell you that this sneaker should be worn only in the purest white, but the commanding red Swoosh here to celebrate this milestone looks the part.

Dunk Low Safari Cacao Wow by Nike

As the name suggests, there’s a lot to unpack with the latest Dunk. The 1980s basketball shoe has enjoyed a second life as a skate shoe, and a third life as the It-shoe of style circles, but for those who think that a leopard can’t change its spots, here’s proof that you can revamp a classic sneaker with a cheetah print. And let’s not forget a breathable hemp canvas mesh base – ideal for the summer months, should you wear them. You best be on your toes to snare a pair.
