I first ate Danielle Alvarez’s cooking in someone’s home and it was incredible – properly local, ethical, sustainable, tasty and comfy! She manages to transfer her talent to Fred’s without losing any of those qualities, and she works on a table that is practically in the middle of the restaurant. The space is another of hospitality don Justin Hemmes’ amazing creations, taking you into his desired world. The bar downstairs, Charlie Parker’s, is worth getting to dinner early for…and perhaps staying late, too.
If there is a real Fred, he’s not here – this Oxford Street gem is run by Ms Danielle Alvarez, who came from the celebrated Chez Panisse in California. Everything about it is a perfect delight, from the warmth of the linen-clad interior to the very open kitchen, where you can watch the most rigorously sourced seasonal ingredients being prepared with real love. Look out for the lamb leg roasting by the fire – if it’s on, order it, as it’s always a winner.
