I like small quirky hotels in interesting places. My latest favourite is The Old Clare Hotel in Sydney, located inside a big building that used to be a brewery.
The Old Clare was a much-loved and endearingly scruffy pub in the Chippendale district, legendary among local students and musicians for its cheap beer and indie leanings. A recent refurb retained that energy and channelled it into a boutique hotel with a hip bar, rooftop pool, Mr Jason Atherton-helmed restaurant and impeccable rooms, some of which feature freestanding baths. A healthy dose of irreverent Aussie wit means the Old Clare always has an informality that makes it stand out in Central Sydney.
