THE JOURNAL

Even at the best of times, “smart casual” always was an oxymoron. But then the anxiety induced by the vaguest dress code to appear on any invitation was compounded by another open compound: vibe shift. And here we are. So, when even the British prime minister can be seen in slides while his multi-billionaire wife rocks up for the school run wearing slippers, how is your average Joe Schmoe now supposed to know what to wear anywhere? Well, fear not, because MR PORTER is here to show you the way to elevate your everyday. And the first lesson: in order to be smarter, you must first think smarter. Ah… For further learnings, read on.

The weekend cultural outing

Taking in the arts? Then dress the part. You don’t want draw attention away from whatever you have come to the theatre, museum or gallery to see, but you don’t want to fade from view completely, either. Our all-purpose, all-venues getup would err on the traditional, but with a cheeky, forward-pointing, knowing wink. So, while an overcoat is never wrong, this slouchy robe-like piece in a houndstooth check by Acne Studios is a more left-field kind of right. For a refined take on the staple polo shirt, LE 17 SEPTEMBRE is the date to remember. And while Dries Van Noten plays it straight with these jeans, the straight leg is still playful. See jewellery and accessories as another way to have some fun. The key is to enjoy your outfit as much as your outing.

The at-home dinner

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or attending one at a friend’s place, taking an “at-home” outfit up a notch is a nice way to lend a sense of occasion to this, er, occasion. Tempting though it may be, the last think you want to do is receive your guests in your onion-fragranced togs when guests arrive. You don’t have to try too hard (in this situation, a suit is too hard), but take 10 minutes to slip out of your apron and sweats and into some wide-leg trousers, such as these from VETEMENTS, a laid-back flannel shirt and a cardigan. You will look and feel comfortable while you catch up with your buds, plus, you won’t reek of food prep. Extra points if you can throw on some jewellery. This ring from Pearls Before Swine is sure to get people talking.

The work catch-up

If you are the sort of creative multihyphenate whose office is Anywhere With Wi-Fi, and whose job title is an enigma to anyone over 45, chances are the lines between your work and off-duty wardrobe are blurred. This is not necessarily a bad thing – who wants to stuff themselves into a suit every morning? – but it is easy to descend into sloppy territory whenever there’s a deadline round the corner. Your WFH sweatpants are not entirely off-limits outside your WFH set-up. Throw on a collared shirt and swap your sneakers for G.H. Bass & Co. loafers. Nili Lotan’s checked coat will earn approval from big-wig clients as well as the cool kids in your co-working space (and you can always layer a jacket underneath if it’s nippy). Do not leave the house without Master-Piece’s satisfyingly functional backpack, which has ample room for your laptop, power pack and smart mug.

The drinks party

You have landed an invitation to a swanky evening do. It could be your fanciest friend’s birthday drinks or a hot-ticket launch party. The goal here is to settle on a look that is appropriate for the upscale setting, makes you memorable for the right reasons and does not betray the fact you spent weeks deliberating. Start with Saman Amel’s exquisitely tailored wide-leg trousers. The pin-sharp pleats and subtle sheen of the wool-drill ooze elegance. From there, opt for the most luxurious and impeccably crafted iterations of your everyday favourites. The Row’s expectedly sumptuous take on the classic white T-shirt and Lemaire’s merino-wool cardigan are plush enough to hold their own after dark, especially when layered under Giorgio Armani’s buttery-smooth suede trucker. Finally, round things out with a leather portfolio and silver jewellery for an outfit that captivates in photographs as well as in the flesh.

The lunch with the in-laws

They are family (or will be at some point), so your in-laws should, in theory, love you unconditionally and for who you are. So, if who you are is a man who won’t make the effort for family, then it’s time to rethink your values. Start with a simple base layer – straight-legged (not distressed) jeans by Etro and a Thom Browne Oxford shirt – and then you can build from there. If you feel most at home in sweats and streetwear, swap your logo-emblazoned jersey for a grown-up version by Ghiaia Cashmere. Finally, Manolo Blahnik’s chunky-soled loafers will earn top marks for their polish and practicality, while Boglioli’s double-breasted blazer says, “I respect you for raising my partner and still want to impress you, even though you have seen me in my Christmas pyjamas.”
