It’s nice to have favourites, but you can't wear Margaret Howell, Givenchy or Thom Browne from head-to-toe, every day. It looks a bit billboard-y. And it’s also no fun. No, to avoid being the sartorial equivalent of Mr Augustus Gloop (think of your personal style as a giant pipe: you don’t want to get stuck in it), you need to mix it up. In that vein, we want to introduce you to some brands that will become your new best friends, all making their debut on MR PORTER for the autumn/ winter 2015 season. Whether you’re a tasteful minimalist, veritable style hound or simply looking for an enormous down-filled coat to get you through the coming months, there will be something here for you.

Rocky Mountain Featherbed was founded in the 1960s in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, aka an area known as “the Cowboy State”. By the 1980s it had ceased trading, consigned forever to that place in the sky where brands go to die. Or so it seemed, until the brand was resurrected by Japanese fashion company 35 Summers Co Ltd – releasing an impeccable reissue of RMF’s signature outerwear pieces in 2005 – and has been going from strength to strength ever since.

Today, therefore, RMF is where a classic Western aesthetic (note the signature detail of a seamless, leather shoulder yoke) meets the kind of meticulous expertise and dedication to authenticity, which has become a hallmark of Japanese style. The brand’s key piece this season has to be the “Christy” jacket: a down-filled aviator-style piece embellished with a cosy shearling collar. Get it now and ensure your status as the most rootin’-tootin’ of your friends when the winter weather really kicks in.

Named after Monestier-de-Clermont, a mountain village in France, Moncler was founded to supply garments specifically designed for mountaineering. Now it’s renowned as the luxury world’s foremost expert in serious down-filled outerwear, whether you find yourself hurtling down a snow-covered slope or just hurtling off to some trendy urban hotspot on a dark winter night. For Moncler’s debut season, launching on MR PORTER next week, we’re offering a select edit of pieces from the brand’s Grenoble line (more suitable for outdoor or performance purposes) as well as Moncler Gamme Bleu, a forward-looking collection designed by none other than Mr Thom Browne. Father and son duo Messrs Joe and Charlie Casely-Hayford are paving a new way for British menswear with a collection grounded in technical (and slightly sporty) tailoring. The firm’s vision of “innovation through tradition” aptly captures that mix of English sartorialism and convention-breaking, which comes across perfectly this season in some outstanding patterned knits and a unique winter coat in thick, shaggy bouclé wool.

The original designer sports collaboration, Y-3 is a joint effort between the godfather of Japanese fashion Mr Yohji Yamamoto and world-famous sportswear brand adidas. Come here for sneakers that wouldn't look out of place in Back to the Future, meticulously considered sweats and sleek, futuristic outerwear that’s equally impressive in terms of performance as well as aesthetic.

Understated, authentic and supremely cool, Several; is a new brand that takes British subculture and the art world as starting inspirations for its quietly luxurious collections. The brand’s founder Mr Graeme Fidler, a former creative director for iconic Swiss brand Bally, has a well-honed eye for pleasing minimalism and superlative quality, both of which are very much evident in the brand’s range of knits and outerwear (made with premium British fabrics) for autumn/ winter 2015.
