THE JOURNAL

The warmest, cosiest knitwear to keep you toasty in the harsh winter weather.
You would have thought that the concept of frozen water was something that we could all handle without too much fuss. But no, in the UK it falls from the sky around this time of year, and we all marvel at its wonder. “It’s snowing!” we cry, baffled. Yes, it’s snowing. Like it did last year, and like it will, depending on the speed of global warming, next year (and the year after). But this does not stop transport grinding to a halt, like clockwork, every January. And it did not deter most of the MR PORTER office from running to the windows that morning to get a better view of the mystical white stuff. Once the initial novelty has worn off, however, some stark realisations about this magical substance begin to set in. You are no longer young enough to go sledging, so snow conjures up practical problems rather than exciting opportunity. Will your commute home be affected? Should you just stay in tonight? And, with keeping warm in mind, should you wear an extra layer tomorrow? We’re not sure about the answers to the first two questions, but we do think you ought to stay warm and cosy. So below, we’ve picked out three of the best cashmere pieces new on site today to choose from. Brrr!
THE SCARF
The most obvious thing you might look to add to your arsenal in the face of freezing weather is a good scarf. But this piece by Berluti is neither “obvious” nor simply “good”. First, its colour: is that red? Is it pink? Maybe it’s salmon. Whatever it is, we really like it, not to mention the bright orange trim. And the fact it’s made with cashmere, with fringed ends, makes it that little bit more special. Pair with a good woolly hat, such as this beanie from Lock & Co Hatters, and your extremities will be as warm as toast.
THE SWEATER
Once you have experienced a small dose of cashmere, it is difficult to resist its charms further. So: embrace it. Why stop with a scarf? You’ll need a good solid foundation layer of cashmere to stay truly insulated, after all. Which is where this sweater by Dries Van Noten comes in. Crafted from a pleasing mix of charcoal, grey and white yarns, it manages to be both luxurious and slightly irreverent. Pair it with some premium Nudie Jeans denim for new weekend wear.
THE BLAZER
If you’re in the market for something a little smarter, but still want to keep nice and cosy in cashmere, some sharp tailoring by Mr Paul Smith might be the answer. Crafted in Italy, this blazer has been unlined through the torso to keep it loose, so it could easily be worn in both a formal manner, or as part of a more casual look. With the former in mind, we’ve chosen a crisp white shirt from J.Crew to slip underneath.
