THE JOURNAL

Three ways to introduce athleisure into your everyday wardrobe.
Even if your interest in fashion and its accompanying trends is cursory, you will probably have noticed that the influence of sportswear shows no signs of abating. In fact, it has never been more present. Time was when sweatpants were for training or a lazy weekend indoors, and football scarves were designed to show your allegiance to your favourite team. Now, you can happily mix your favourite hangover threads with tailoring, and drop hundreds of pounds on designers’ high-fashion interpretation of soccer regalia. One such designer is Mr Gosha Rubchinskiy, whose FW18 sportswear-heavy collection went viral on Sunday. A collaboration with adidas in among the Burberry- and Dr. Martens-inspired pieces produced some looks that were, shall we say, rather heavy on the streetwear. Actually, let’s not beat around the bush. One model had three stripes shaved into his head. If you like the idea of going a bit sportier, but don’t wish to reveal your intentions in the form of a drastic haircut, we’ve selected some items new on MR PORTER today and suggested how you can subtly incorporate them into your wardrobe.
THE SWEATPANTS
You could wear these with the matching hoodie and slip on both items of clothing after a workout when going to pick up a restorative coffee. But this is not 2014. This is 2018, and Nike sweatpants are not just for casual post-gym wear. They are for, well, pretty much any occasion. Within reason, of course. If you want to introduce these into an outfit, we suggest pairing them with either a relaxed wool blazer, or some laidback workwear, such as this thick Chimala shirt. Running for the bus when you’re late for dinner just got that little bit easier.
THE SWIM SHORTS
If you’re a little nervous about the prospect of embracing this trend, dip your toe in the water while on holiday with these. As a brand, Thom Browne could not be explicitly described as producing either sports- or streetwear, but its signature four stripes hint at an athletic influence, especially when they’re stitched onto shell material. To ensure you look suitably relaxed, pack a T-shirt to slip on with them when the sun goes down. This one by AMI gets our vote.
THE HOODIE
It speaks volumes that our Editors’ note for this item suggests using it for running, while our stylists have paired it with wool trousers. Unless you are a particularly gentlemanly jogger, this shows that we can, if we wish, dress this up for social events as readily as we can keep it for activewear purposes. Given the weather is still rather inclement, we like wearing a hoodie such as this as a layer under a smart overcoat. It provides a fun alternative to a cashmere sweater (and a point of contrast to your outerwear). And the hood dispenses any need for a woollen hat.
