July 2015

Words by Mr Adam Welch

We round up the best dressed looks from last month.

Round about now is the time most people are thinking of going on holiday. Not so much the On the Town set – yes, a few of them, like Mr Eddie Redmayne, have spent July doing normal-human-being things such as going to the beach, but for the most part they’re still clocking in every day, scrolling through an endless and packed iCal that looks a little like this: “party/ opening/ book signing/ event/ gala/ party/ premiere/ opening…” To be honest it all looks a little exhausting. But there were an elite few who made it look easy and stylish to boot. Find out who made it on the list below.

MR RYAN REYNOLDS

It’s a bold move matching a navy suit with a shirt in the same colour, but when done confidently by Mr Ryan Reynolds, it works. Like a smart version of a full look in indigo denim, it seems contemporary and ready for the city, plus it works nicely with his burgundy shoes. The sporty backpack is a slightly anomalous touch, but in the context of the whole look (and the determined set of Mr Reynold’s face) it gives a clear message: this man means business. The fact that he’s probably just about to hop into a chauffeur-driven car rather than a dogfight of a board meeting doesn’t diminish this at all.

Mr Mark Ronson

Mr Mark Ronson is up to his old tricks again: wayfarers, slicked-back hair, a print shirt, skinny jeans and two-tone winklepickers. This contemporary take on a 1950s look is very much business as usual for the super producer but – such is the alignment of the stars – this season it’s also very much on trend. We imagine this will continue well into the autumn, especially with the release of a Mr James Dean biopic titled _Life i_n September, starring the indefatigably cool Mr Dane DeHaan. So Mr Ronson not only gets points for looking good, but also for his sartorial clairvoyance. Copy him by pointing your browser at MR PORTER’s current selection of goodies from Saint Laurent. And then kiss yourself (see what we did there?).

MR EDDIE REDMAYNE

Our first thought on seeing Oscar-winning actor Mr Eddie Redmayne strolling along the beach in St Tropez this July was “we hope he’s applied enough sun cream”, as he doesn’t look like the type who tans well. Our second thought was “Thom Browne on the beach? Brilliant!” The reason we were so tickled about this washed-out combo of Oxford shirt and white chino shorts was that it echoes the colours, but not the typical dress code, of the seaside. It’s almost as if Mr Redmayne (not averse to a period drama or two) has taken us temporarily back to a more covered up and gentlemanly time. As we endure the perpetual, ill-advised gun (and gut) show that is Britain in the summer, this seems rather refreshing. Good for you, Mr Redmayne.

MR JAMES MARSDEN

Guess what Mr James Marsden is wearing. Anyone? Yes, this isn’t the most subtle photographic backdrop the world has ever seen, but Mr Marsden looks fantastic in this midnight blue suit, nicely contrasted with brown cap-toe Oxfords. The slim, but not too skinny, cut flatters his compact frame. The details, such as the tie pin and pocket square, have also been placed with impeccable precision. Overall it’s a festival of sleek, graphic lines and subtle, yet impactful colour choices – and it fits perfectly. If only we could figure out where to buy it all from. The torment.

MR SKYLAN BROOKS

Prepare to feel old and unaccomplished: Mr Skylan Brooks is only 16, yet is currently appearing on the big screen alongside Messrs Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker and Curtis Jackson (aka 50 Cent) in this summer’s standout (ie, only) boxing movie, Southpaw. He’s also, evidently, confident enough in wearing a suit that he can pair it with white sneakers, and make it work. In the nicest way possible: damn him.

MR HIDETOSHI NAKATA

We wouldn’t normally recommend cravats for those who aren’t in the antiques business, or putting on a play of some sort. But retired footballer Mr Hidetoshi Nakata, who, as far as we know, isn’t exploring either creative avenue right now, manages to carry off the accessory with aplomb here. This is probably because he’s offset the slightly archaic feel of the cravat with a modern combo of black shirt and jeans. It looks sleek rather than flouncy, assured rather than romantic. This is why (as above), he tends to be pictured clutching invites to things. Who wouldn’t want this outfit meandering around their party?

MR ALEXANDER SKARSGÅRD

At 6’4” and counting, Mr Alexander Skarsgård presumably has a rather unpleasant time folding himself into aeroplane seats, however roomy it may get up at the front of the cabin. Here, spotted at LAX airport, he counteracts the inevitable big squeeze by dressing in an enviably smooth travel outfit, comprised of raw denim jeans, adidas Stan Smiths, an untucked shirt and a big squishy bag (all the better for shoving in the overhead lockers). He’s also opted for large-lensed sunglasses – something of a long-haul saviour. This is a look that says: “I travel a lot”, as well as “I’m famous – so what?” At MR PORTER we admire this sort of laid-back cool.

MR BRENDAN FALLIS

DJ and man about town Mr Brendan Fallis is perennially seen at New York’s finest parties pairing sharp tailoring with high-end sportswear, from shining white sneakers to leather bomber jackets and sweatpants. Here, he’s dispensed with the tailoring element, throwing together a more summer- and street-appropriate look with a pair of loud print shorts and one of New York’s coolest brand Public School’s distinctive Avelina T-shirts (recognisable by its hockey shirt-style collar). Though it’s certainly not a look for the faint-hearted, this demonstrates admirable restraint and balance – the lesson being that if you’ve got one busy element in your outfit, keep the rest as simple as possible.
