THE JOURNAL
This is usually the time of year when one sees the light at the end of their winter blues, that light being an impulsively purchased airplane ticket to someplace, any place, with a beach and above-freezing temperatures. For those fortunate enough to safely venture to a seaside destination, or for anyone who would simply like to manifest sunny vacation vibes wherever they might be, you’re in luck. Inspired by Miami, we’ve curated some bits and pieces from across MR PORTER that would look just right in the lush, lively, culturally complex US city that’s been a perennial holiday hot spot since forever.
Dressing for a place like Miami requires ample planning and the right formula, generally equal parts form, function and flair. The former two aspects are a necessity given the oppressively humid days that can go from sunshine to torrential downpour and back again before you gulp down a cafecito. The latter, well, because you’re in Miami, and you don’t want to get lost amid the blocks of technicolour street art and parade of exotic cars along Collins Avenue. Herewith, three luxe looks to keep you cool whenever things start to heat up – sunblock included.
01.
Morning

A proper day at the beach requires more than just a pair of swim trunks and boozy seltzer. If you want to attract attention, but are still working on sculpting that six pack, opt for a breezy, elevated ensemble. Camp-collar shirts are always a good place to start and shorts by Brunello Cucinelli paired with Manolo Blahnik sandals ensure that you’re avoiding the appearance of a sun-soaked schlub. Speaking of which, a wide-brimmed hat and SPF lotion are essential for saving your skin from those harsh rays. The best thing about this look is that you can pack up the deck chair, throw all your gear into a satchel, and be on your way to a rooftop bar without having to change. Maybe leave the chair with the front desk.
02.
Dusk

When it’s time for some serious R&R, it’s always a good idea to overemphasise the relaxed part of the expression. A light, loose-fitting button-up and shorts will make the most of that late-afternoon sea breeze. Go bold with your prints, and don’t be afraid to mix things up – just keep an eye on colour and scale to keep things cohesive. Another semi-pro tip: when your luggage set is from Gucci, packing becomes much less painful. Larger pieces are great for the main trip, but keep a mid-sized bag handy when you’re on the ground. This LOEWE belt bag is perfect for holding all your essentials since relaxed shorts aren’t always the best for carrying heavy phones and bulky wallets.

Night

Never shy away from colour when you’re in a city as vibrant as Miami, especially after the sun goes down. Accessories are always a trusty vessel for making a statement, whether it’s a bright bag or a splash of jewellery. Anchor it all with a crisp yet lightweight cotton shirt and shorts, such as this gabardine pair from Dries Van Noten. Remember to shift your fragrance to reflect the after-hours atmosphere. Warmer, headier aromas are usually better than anything too bright and citrusy. Also, this is one of the few places in the world where it’s perfectly acceptable to wear sunglasses at night. That’s one thing we can all thank Pitbull for.
