01. The Prince of Wales checked coat

Angling for new outerwear this season? We’ve fallen hook, line and sinker for this classic Prince of Wales checked coat. A winter coat should always be considered an investment and this virgin wool variety is a masterclass in craftsmanship and timeless style. They say good things are built to last and this oversized fit is an easy way to ensure you won’t be fretting about the cold for many seasons to come.

02. The mock-neck sweater

The most effortless way to add a touch of stealth to your new-season wardrobe, the mock-neck sweater is loved by secret agents and 1960s ad men alike. Perfect for an autumn stroll, this drawstring variety is made from a mix of cashmere and wool, offering the ideal blend of warmth and comfort. Pro tip: if you’re heading into the great outdoors, it’ll work exceptionally well with slim-fit jeans and chukka boots (see below). Staying in? Kick off your shoes and pair with sweatpants and a box set – something in the spy genre would be appropriate.

03. The chukka boots

Contrary to our opening gambit, chukka boots were not originally designed for leisure activities. These lightweight boots with supportive traction were first worn by soldiers in desert conditions. They may be made for trekking in sand dunes, but they need to be comfortable and versatile, too, which makes them ideal taking-it-easy footwear. These suede split-toe boots have a Dainite rubber sole, so you can feel confident stepping out in all weathers. They are also lined with shearling, which means wherever you wear them, your feet will feel cosseted and ridiculously cosy.

04. The low-top sneakers

If desert boots aren’t your thing, wind down this winter with a pair of low-top sneakers, one of the simplest ways to step up your style game. These leather Larry sneakers boast a streamlined design, but are robust in their construction, so shouldn’t be considered solely an autumn-specific wardrobe addition. They’ll work year-round, although they are especially adept at weathering adverse conditions. To wit, if you’re worried about what might happen to them once you leave the house, relax. The hardy pebble-grain leather is an insurance against light scuffs and scrapes.

05. The flannel overshirt

Kicking back is easier said than done when autumn can bring with it some changeable weather. The overshirt is an ideal layering piece for the chillier months. Mr P.’s George flannel example comes in a neutral charcoal grey that will slot easily into your existing wardrobe and can be thrown on and taken off according to which way the winds blows.
