THE JOURNAL

Festive picks from the new arrivals on MR PORTER this week, including the hat, socks and robe you need to wrap up in.
Over the course of December, in the lead up to Christmas – also known as “the holiday season” – we are going to be casting a keen eye over the new arrivals on MR PORTER and picking out the most season-appropriate clothes we can find. Given that this time of year is all about cheer, comfort and cockle-warming colours, you can expect the clothing to be very much in the same vein: enough to melt the heart of even the most committed Scrooge. First up, we’re easing our way into things with some exceptionally cosy bits and pieces from Marwood, John Elliott and Cleverly Laundry.
THE SWEATER
As we wrote recently, there is a way to invest in a jolly festive sweater without alienating your peers via offensively bright designs/cartoon characters/buttons which emit annoying ditties and/or flashing lights. And this piece from Polo Ralph Lauren, new on site today, continues to prove our point. Woven from Scottish and Italian yarns, it exhibits a traditional Fair Isle design, and some subtly seasonal colours – which should look right at home around the Christmas dinner table. And if you decide to venture outside, why not slip on a peacoat?
THE BEANIE
As we wrote recently, there are few brands around at the moment that are cooler than John Elliott. So he might not take kindly to one of his items featuring in a cheery edit of Christmas-appropriate pieces. But, alas, if you make a bright red beanie then you are opening yourself up to festive appropriation. And festively appropriate it we will. All you need is some thick gloves – like these substantial mittens from British brand Dents – and you’re all set for a day at a Christmas market.
THE STOCKINGS
Not that you would use them for such a purpose – given that cashmere is a rather gentle creature which must be nurtured – but these socks are in fact large enough to be stockings, into which, as we know, gifts traditionally go. Indeed, they would look rather nice lined up on your mantelpiece above the fire. But instead of mandarins and chocolate money, we would like to place our feet into them. Luxuriate in their ribbed softness. And enjoy their festive colour. Or, since it’s the season of giving, you could always gift them to someone else. Who doesn’t need a good pair of socks?
