THE JOURNAL

From actor Mr George Clooney to rapper A$AP Rocky, here are the well-dressed men we’d like to see leading the US.
There’s no mistaking that 2016 has been a dramatic year in US politics. So apologies if this adds to the confusion somewhat. But, as the final phase of the presidential election process grinds into gear this summer, MR PORTER has been prompted to indulge in some blue-sky thinking. What if we lived in a world where style were as important as statesmanship? Who would we vote for then? We’re not sure where all the following men stand on immigration, or climate change, or the economy, but we do know they dress well. Isn’t that as good a reason as any to elect a leader of the free world?
MR TOM BRADY

The Tom Ford-wearing quarterback of the New England Patriots will be looking for a career beyond American football soon. His good looks. His personal style. His ability to work through a scandal such as Deflategate (in which Mr Tom Brady blamed a subordinate for underinflating the footballs that allowed New England to win a crucial 2015 play-off game), and the prospect of having Ms Gisele Bündchen as first lady all make for a potent package. And there is a precedent for gridiron stars seeking higher office: President Gerald Ford (1974-1977), an all-American at the University of Michigan, turned down offers from both the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears to attend Yale Law School; and Mr Jack Kemp was a pro quarterback for 13 seasons before entering the Senate and eventually running unsuccessfully as Vice President.

MR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG

The billionaire former Mayor of New York considered entering this election cycle, but determined that a third-party candidacy would only make Mr Donald Trump’s path to power that much easier. The founder of the eponymous financial information company took over New York in the wake of 9/11 and left it a safer and more financially solid city on his departure. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has always had a Mayfair-meets-Manhattan style, favouring tailoring during the week and chinos at the weekend. He would have a leg-up on foreign policy from running a multi-national news organisation, as well as owning homes in London, Bermuda and other posh spots around the globe.

Based on his own personal network, Mr Rakim Mayers would be a willing and gifted student of international relations. He counts Mr Raf Simons (the Belgian fashion designer), Japan’s NIGO of A Bathing Ape, and Britain’s Mr Jeremy Scott as friends, and we would love to see Mr Rick Owens design an inaugural ensemble. Born in Harlem and raised for a time in Pennsylvania, he would be able to deliver two states with large numbers of electoral votes.

Mr Jerry Brown

When he was first elected Governor of California (a state whose economy would make it the eighth largest in the world if it were a country) in 1975, Mr Jerry Brown was single and dating the popstar Ms Linda Ronstadt. Photos of him from that era (white jeans, Adidas sambas, spread-collar shirts) appear to foreshadow a style of normcore dressing that hit its stride some years later, thanks to Messers Spike Jonze and Wes Anderson. While often dismissed as too liberal to win The White House, he has dealt with many of the key issues (immigration, water shortage, technology) that would make him a compelling Democratic contender.

Mr George Clooney

Just as the Republicans have seen Mr Ronald Reagan and Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger, both former actors, become President of the United States and Governor of California respectively, the Democrats would be wise to start grooming this actor-director for office. He is no stranger to fine European tailoring and political activism, having served as one of the United Nations’ Messengers of Peace since 2008. His humanitarian work includes his advocacy of finding a resolution for the Darfur conflict, raising funds for victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Armenian Genocide recognition, support following the 2004 tsunami, and aid for 9/11 victims. His wife of two years Ms Amal Clooney, the chic British-Lebanese lawyer whose clients have included WikiLeaks co-founder Mr Julian Assange and the country of Cambodia, would make an exceptional first lady.
