Staff Picks: Small But Perfectly Formed

Words by The MR PORTER Team

“Don’t sweat the small stuff” is a solid life mantra. But sometimes it’s the small things that make life that bit better. Whether it’s a kind gesture, a home-cooked meal or a tiny prized possession that simply brightens our day, we understand the value of the tiny details. It’s the same with style. We wear jewellery to add a finishing touch to an outfit, don’t feel complete until we’ve splashed on a little fragrance and some of us even insist on socks when it comes to dressing well. Five of the MR PORTER team share their favourite little things.

01.

I haven’t worn much jewellery for the past year. Rings were out of the question with all that hand washing and anything else just felt unnecessary. Strange, then, but perhaps not totally unpredictable, that now that the world is waking up again, I feel possessed by the desire to don some bling. Which means this 18-carat gold and onyx necklace by Foundrae, embossed with an arrow, a star and a triangle of diamonds, has found its way onto my Wish List. Call it a comeback.

02.

Psychologically, we are predisposed to find miniature creatures cute – puppies, babies, Baby Yoda. We instinctively want to take care of them. They look like toys and take us back to a time when we were young, played all day and didn’t have any of the responsibilities that come with being an adult – bills, bills and more bills. This does not apply to me at all (cough), but after regretting not picking up the last Baby Yoda (aka Grogu) just before Christmas last year, I’m taking the opportunity to add this vintage Charlie Brown and Snoopy figurines by Medicom to my collection. For the record, they are not toys. They are memorabilia.

03.

I have always been fascinated by aliens and UFOs and still Google “recent UFO sightings” on a regular basis, so anything extraterrestrial gets my vote. This little Flagstuff incense holder deserves a spot on my mantelpiece next to the alien bobblehead and Area 51 print. Remember, the truth is out there.

04.

Few things make me feel like I’m ready to face the day like a splash of something sweet-smelling. Even during the darkest days of lockdown, a time when you couldn’t peel me out of my sweatpants, I was liberally spritzing away. As for the sweet-smelling bottle in question? I’ve been shamelessly feeding my powerless addiction to Laboratory Perfumes’ Samphire scent. Profoundly summery, fresh and citrusy, it’s a perky fragrance that never fails to put me in a great mood.

05.

It irks me that, on our own site, socks are classified as accessories rather than clothes. But where else can such a small garment have a disproportionately big impact? A good pair should be the foundation of an outfit (and a bad pair the sword it falls on, to mix metaphors like, well, odd socks). This pair by KAPITAL combine leopard print, for walking on the wild side, with the brand’s trademark smiley, which really makes the heel click. Look, if they’re good enough for the actual Mr Frank Ocean, who wore them, and little else, on the sleeve of his single “In My Room”…
