What Our Editors Want From The MR PORTER Sale

Words by The MR PORTER Team

10 June 2020

Despite the fact that we’re often occupied with new product drops, high-level tailoring and the best pieces our money can buy, we on the MR PORTER team are not ashamed to say that, much like you, we also like bagging a discounted item of clothing from our shop as much as the next person.

So, the Sale (yes, the SALE!), which began on Monday, is as much an interest of ours as it is yours – whether you’ve got your eye on a single piece that was just out of your price range, or you’re looking to save a few quid on a splurge. To highlight this, we asked some of our members of staff to talk about an item they have on their Wish Lists and why.

Read this for inspiration, and then, if you fancy, feel free to shop the entire Sale here.

01. The sneakers

Change is not a thing I cope well with and, for a very long time, I didn’t think there was a sneaker that would tempt me to part ways with my beloved Converse low-tops. But something about adidas’ Continental 80 trainers, with their retro curvature and insignia, was enough to convince me to take a chance. True to form, I’ve never looked back. I haven’t cared for my current pair – which I’ve been wearing on repeat for several years already – as best I should have. This iteration, an excellent off-white leather version with suede accents, will encourage me to treat them with the reverence they deserve in future.

02. The denim jacket

Finding a true investment piece like this in the Sale feels like cheating the system. A timeless example of Americana workwear, woven from organic cotton on a selvedge loom in Japan, by Ms Ora Fine, a South African designer living in Los Angeles, it will go with anything, anywhen, anywhere. Hardworking in many respects, this durable, dependable chore jacket more than does the job.

03. The slides

If slides weren’t a large part of my wardrobe a few months ago, they certainly are now. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve worn nothing else on my feet for weeks. And while I’m looking forward to wearing “proper” shoes when I go out into the real world again, there’s no way I’m giving up the comfort and ease of slides entirely. To upgrade my current collection, I’ve got my eyes on these snappy leather ones from TOM FORD. With a smart pair of trousers and a crisp white T-shirt, I think I’ll just about get away with wearing them to the office, too. Now to decide whether or not to wear socks with them…

04. The cycling jersey

With more spare time in my life, I’ve been looking at once-beloved pursuits, which over the years have fallen by the way side, and reigniting my passion for them. One of these is cycling and with the sun shining and summer firmly on its way, I intend to meticulously clean the old steed and get out on the open road. Before that happens, I need to update my kit. Having already owned, and loved, the Café Du Cycliste bib shorts, I’m going to invest in this black jersey for extra stealthy style points. Bonne chance!

05. The sweater

Whenever I’m shopping the Sale, I tend to steer clear of seasonal fashion and look for continuity product: that’s the mainline knitwear, denim, outerwear et cetera that gets recycled from season to season. Given that a lot of this stuff is bound to crop up in next year’s collections at full price, why not buy it now for 40 or 50 per cent less? My shopping list has an awful lot of Altea on it this year. The brand’s clothes really shouldn’t be in the sale, given how beautifully made and utterly seasonless they are. And this cashmere rollneck sweater is right at the top.
