THE JOURNAL

Stylish and practical pieces for transporting your prized possessions, whatever the weather.
We have decided to admit defeat. You win, weather – you deceitful, unknowable force. So strong are your powers of unpredictability at the moment that we, even as style experts at the peak of our professional careers, cannot decide what to wear in the morning. One day it is so hot and clear we feel like Gary “Gal” Dove in Sexy Beast. The next, it decides to rain so heavily and spontaneously, summer seems like a distant memory. Tricky times.
To combat this identity crisis summer seems to be having at present, we have decided to invest in seasonless pieces: practical items which are not at the behest of the weather. Things that will last us a lifetime, and never fall out of favour, through thick and thin. More specifically – good, leather bags. Thankfully, quite a few have landed on site this week. And here are three of our favourites.
THE TRAVELLER
If you’re looking for something to take away on a late summer holiday (and for any vacation afterwards, for that matter) a large holdall to throw all your effects into won’t be far from your mind. We like this one from Tom Ford which, as you would expect from the renowned designer, represents the height of sophistication. And, and you may have guessed, this is not a meagre investment. But given that you’re dealing with the best deer and calf leather around – which will only improve in appearance with age – we see it as a worthy purchase for the long-term. Indeed, it will last last longer than your wanderlust. But in the meantime, here’s a rather fetching Montblanc passport holder for the truly wordly gentleman – replete with nifty slots for any other bits and pieces.
THE CITY SLICKER
Now for something a little more rough and ready: the perfect, practical leather bag to take around town. Brooks England are perhaps better known for their leather saddles, and for good reason: they’ve been making them for long enough (since 1878 to be precise). But more recently they’ve branched out into bags – and it’s because of pieces like this that we are very thankful. Its slim figure belies a generous size (12 litres, fact fans), and if you decide to fill it to the brim, there’s a zip situated at the lower back, which means accessing items hidden at the bottom is extremely easy. We also like the rugged straps which have more than a hint of the explorer about them. You don’t have to ride a bike to wear one of these, but you do have to be a little on the hip side. So slim jeans, like these from Levi’s, are a must.
THE BUSINESS BAG
Bag (noun): a flexible container with an opening at the top, used for carrying things. We feel the need to clarify the Oxford English Dictionary definition for this trusty accessory because, well, although this particular piece by Miansai is strictly a “portfolio”, it is also, if we’re going by the book, a bag of sorts. And we want to include it in our roundup as it offers something the other two cannot – namely, a sleek method of carrying and protecting documents. So you’re pretty much sorted for any eventuality. Oh, and here’s a nice Tom Dixon pen to go with it.
