Three Winter Warmers From Mr Todd Snyder

Words by Mr Adam Welch

The suede jacket, shearling jacket and wool trousers you need to keep you cosy in the colder months.

Iowa-born, New York-based designer Mr Todd Snyder is a man with an uncanny ability to marry downtown cool with a sharp, tailored aesthetic. An alumnus of Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap and J.Crew, he clearly knows how to create thoroughly wearable everyday clothes, but his eponymous brand, launched in 2011, has always been about providing a little bit more than that, with its covetable outerwear, sharp shirting and truly excellent sweats (produced in collaboration with iconic US sports brand Champion). Mr Snyder’s efforts in the realm of style have naturally not gone unnoticed. He’s been heaped with various awards in the past five years, including a CFDA/Swarovski Award For Menswear in 2012. But that’s just the cherry on the cake, really. The real proof is in the clothes. Scroll down to discover a few of our favourite pieces from the new Todd Snyder collection, which lands on MR PORTER today.

Warm and substantial, yet simultaneously sleek and stylish, a suede jacket will come in handy all year round. Todd Snyder’s latest example is particularly useful in this respect, thanks to its pared-back, minimal design and raglan shoulders, which give the whole thing a bit of a no-fuss slouch. On a casual weekend walk, pair it with one of the brand’s maxi tartan shirts.

Cotton twill chinos are, we have often remarked, among the fundamental cornerstones of a man’s wardrobe. But will they cut it in winter? There comes a point, usually from November to January, if you live in London or New York, where you just have to admit to yourself that your legs are cold, and you need to invest in some proper wool trousers instead. Todd Snyder’s proposition in this department feature a distinctive Prince of Wales check pattern that might seem a little formal were it not for their appealingly streamlined slim cut. Dress them up with a blazer and shirt, or simply throw on another winter security blanket – in the form of Todd Snyder’s merino wool sweater – and prepare to seriously style out the cold in your downtime, too.

There are a lot of shearling jackets out there this winter. In fact, sheepskin has turned out to be something of a runaway trend for the past several seasons. But what we particularly like about this example from Todd Snyder is its rich, dark green colour, which brings to mind a slightly utilitarian, military influence as opposed to the usual frontierland scenario. Wear it with one of Mr Snyder’s classic sweatshirts and a pair of pristine white sneakers as you nip about town.
