The latest, possibly ironic offerings from Mr Demna Gvasalia.
Balenciaga, under the ironic eye of Mr Demna Gvasalia, has evolved from a high-end fashion house into something much more. It is still an arbiter of great luxury and brilliant clothing, but it is also, for want of a better term, also a bit weird. Its Instagram account has been the talk of the fashion industry for a while because of its unusual posts (see the old man pictured from behind wearing an “I heart techno” T-shirt, or a pair of disembodied, booted legs sticking out from inside a washing machine), and the Daily Mail called it “bizarre”. It’s a strange direction for a brand historically associated with serious fashion, but it’s also fun and, crucially in today’s glut of designers, it stands out.
But what of the clothes themselves? Well, they’re a little more palatable and easier to wrap your head around – but don’t let that fool you into thinking they’re not unique. MR PORTER’s most recent drop from the brand consists of the four products below, and each thing has a satisfyingly individual USP. The playing card-print shirt, for instance, is a messy poker-table made cloth, and has a sharply tailored “shrunken” fit. The red satin number, printed with “loved you yesterday, love you still, always have, always will”, which we think is charmingly romantic, as clothes go.
Both shirts will look the part under the brand’s incredibly versatile denim jacket, and depending on how deep down the Balenciaga rabbit hole you want to venture, you can also don its Matrix-style sunglasses. They’re a little statement-making to be sure, but as Morpheus once said: free your mind.
