The MR PORTER Team’s Style Resolutions

Words by Mr Jonathan Dann

22 December 2016

The wardrobe reboots we’re planning for the new year.

It’s that time of year again. After a season of excess and indulgence, we sit ourselves down, take a breath and make the promise to become better versions of ourselves. Maybe you’re deciding whether to eat better, drink less or work harder? Or maybe you plan to give yourself, body and soul, to the gym?

It is all very worthy, of course, but the problem with resolutions is that they often involve doing something you don’t actually want to do. Little wonder then, statistically speaking, you have a less than a 10 per cent chance of accomplishing your goals.

But don’t lose all hope just yet. Follow the MR PORTER staff who, this year, will be making some very stylish resolutions. If you start with your wardrobe, everything else might just fall into place. Maybe you will get a promotion, or maybe you will fall in love… So, read on, be inspired, and you never know what you might accomplish in 2017.

This year, I want to get my shred skills up to scratch. So, while I’m planning my spring wardrobe, I’m still dreaming of the ski slopes. The Gore-Tex fabric of this Burton jacket means it can handle both sub-zero and wet conditions, while the poppy red will make me visible to the snow patrol when I go AWOL in a white-out. Thinking ahead to spring, I don’t want to get caught out by the temperature change between seasons – as I have been known to – so I intend to get some Visvim knitwear, which is always up to the task. This graphic piece will work equally well with selvedge jeans as tailored cropped trousers. I predict a scorcher of a summer, by the way, so I’m buying my sunnies now before they sell out. Max Pittion makes some of the best by updating classic shapes. They’ll also be good for New Year’s Day if the champagne flows a little too freely the night before.

My one and only New Year’s resolution for 2017 is to go on holiday as much as possible. As such, I am not investing in new gym kit in the misguided hope I will exercise more in January. Nor am I eyeing up a camera to pursue a new hobby.  I am simply thinking of garish swim shorts, nautical knits and printed T-shirts. The way I see it – given most traditional resolutions are aimed at making you look and feel better – a good holiday somewhere sunny is all you need anyway.

For me, 2017 is all about getting fitter and stronger. I know, I said that last year, too, and over the past 12 months I have been asked many times what the best gear for training is. Here are my essentials. These Power Speed Flash tights by Nike Running not only have the coolest name (and the sickest graphic) but they are also made from the brand’s signature Dri-Fit material that wicks moisture and keeps you dry during the hardest exercise. Added bonus: they also have a tiny pocket on the back where you can keep your locker key. The new edition of the Nike Metcon 2 has an improved rubber sole that provides amazing traction and keeps you cool and comfy, thanks to its breathable mesh material. You could use them for heavy weightlifting (thanks to the rigid soles), but they are suitable for short runs, too – or even CrossFit and interval training. Stretching is fundamental and many people forget to do so, blaming lack of time. Because I travel a lot, I always keep a Mini Triggerpoint foam roller in my bag. It improves muscle recovery after an intense workout as it helps the flow of oxygen and blood.

This is the first full year of my thirties, so I suppose my resolution should be to grow up a bit. Though I do stress “a bit”. I’ve seen it happen all too often: men hit an arbitrary milestone in age and decide they need to start dressing in head-to-toe tweed. I’m hoping to let my own style mature a little more gradually in 2017, starting from the ground up with shoes. As I write these words, I’m reminded of a feature I wrote for MR PORTER back in January 2016, in which I highlighted six pairs of shoes every man d’un certain age should own. I must confess that I still only own one of them myself. Maybe my resolution should be to put that right.

It’s 2017, but it feels like we passed through the looking glass into the future several years ago – not that my wardrobe reflects this. So, my resolution is to update my attire and embrace this fashion-forward streetwear trend that seems to be big with the kids these days. Luckily, I’ve seen the future. Let’s start with a pair of Nike Lupinek Flyknit high-tops, which, while not self-lacing, look like the sort of thing Griff Tannen’s gang might don in Back To The Future Part II, set in 2015 (made in 1989). OK, how about this Wacko Maria reversible bomber, which I could imagine on a bōsōzoku biker as he tears through Neo Tokyo in Akira, set in 2019 (made in, oh, 1988). Well, no droog would be seen dead without his, err, white grandad-collar shirt, as worn by Alex in Mr Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (set in the undisclosed future, made in, cripes, 1971). Just be thankful that MR PORTER doesn’t stock gold Lycra jumpsuits, as sported by Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Running Man – set in 2017 (made in 1987). I probably should get out more.

In an effort to be a better man in 2017, I have decided to take better care of my skin, invest only in timeless wardrobe staples, and finally to get organised. To guarantee the first, I’ll be using La Mer’s Miracle Broth Moisturizing Cream to minimize fine lines. After all, prevention is better than cure. I will ensure the second with this Thom Sweeney cashmere cable-knit sweater. It’s impeccably made and incredibly soft. I know I will enjoy wearing it for many more winters to come. I’m late to everything, so in an effort to keep time on my side, I have decided to invest in an Sekford 1A stainless steel watch. It will be such a pleasure to look at each day, how could I possibly be late ever again? That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

The first and chief resolution of mine for new year is a simple one – buy more Gucci. And do this often. Mr Alessandro Michele, the brand’s creative director, has created a collection this season that I would like to own, in its entirety. I put myself in the category of “enthusiast” when it comes to photography, in that I enthusiastically know what I want a picture to be, but I am not so good at getting it to come out like that, it being God’s want to torture me so. If I were to get hold of this Leica X Typ 113, however, I suspect I wouldn’t need the intervention of the divine to take a decent picture. Cycling is my preferred get-fit-stay-healthy strategy for the New Year, though that doesn’t mean I am going to be clothing myself in Lycra any time soon, and why bother when you can wear a pair of these smart cycling boots from McCaffrey? The pebble-grain leather boots have a pull-up reflective tab at the back and a “pedal pad” in the sole to prevent your foot flying off.
