THE JOURNAL

We don’t tend to use words like “jawnz” or “cop” here at MR PORTER. However, the latest drop of Gallery Dept. wares does justify a bit of cool-kid, very-online, fashion-dude language. From gym-class-inspired sweatshirts to hold-all belt bags, the new pieces from the Los Angeles-based brand, from the mind of artist Mr Josué Thomas, are absolutely the kind of jawnz it would behoove you to cop now. Below our favourites from the arty streetwear label that never disappoints.
01.
The logo T-shirt

You know that T-shirt you’ve held onto for the past 20 years – the one that still has legible writing on it and is softer than soft? This tee is coming for its hallowed place in your closet. The printing process that Gallery Dept. uses for its logos was specifically chosen because it lasts. No New Age-y digital BS here – just the classics, which this shirt is destined to become.
02.
The perfect sweats

It’s back to school for you in these sweatpants, which look like they were pulled straight out of a PE uniform bin – in a good way. Relive your glory days (or rewrite the worst years of your life, depending on how you experienced your teenage years) in these tapered cotton-jersey sweatpants. They will work fine for a couch hang, but are smart enough for a nip to your local pub.
03.
The larger-than-normal belt bag

Bags these days tend to be comically small or ludicrously capacious. This one is just right. Yes, it’s larger than a normal belt bag (and, when slung across the hips looks a bit like a tool belt), but all that means is that it’s actually useful for lugging around all the paraphernalia you need when you leave the house. This one would not only fit your phone and wallet, but also a book for the commute, some SPF and maybe even a hat.
04.
The throw-back sweatshirt

Fancy a bit of 1990s-era Americana? This sweatshirt has it in spades. It may even prompt a few double-takes from passers-by who are trying to discern which high school you attended. Joke’s on them, of course – you attended the school of Very Good Dressers and we’re pretty sure you aced every class.
05.
The brightest T-shirt

If you enjoy a bit of colour in your life, then you’re certain to love this very bright tee, which could probably be spotted from miles away. In the interest of balance, we recommend pairing this top with some muted shorts or trousers. But if you’d like to go all out, boy do we have a pair of shorts for you coming up…
06.
The brand-rep long-sleeve tee

You may have noticed that designer Josué Thomas likes to emblazon his pieces with the brand’s logo. Nowhere is that more true than on this boxy long-sleeved tee made from 100 per cent cotton. From the front? Gallery Dept. And from the back? What do you know, Gallery Dept. (and Hollywood, CA). If you’re a lover of the brand, there’s no better way to show it than pulling on this shirt.
07.
The easiest T-shirt

Need a T-shirt in a hue that will go with almost everything in your closet? We think this pale-blue logo-printed piece might be the ticket. Jeans, trousers and shorts in all colours and prints with wear nicely with this universally complementary tee. It’s a must-have if you’re not trying to puzzle out pairings every morning.
08.
The court shorts

Remember the orange T-shirt? Here are the matching shorts. Put them together for an eye-popping combination that is, actually, pretty cool. These shorts are made from mesh and trimmed with webbing for that classic basketball look, but if you want to take them off-court, we think they’d look pretty good styled with socks and loafers – but that’s just us.
