We're not quite sure how we got here so quickly – it feels as though it was only about five days ago that we were shoving freezer blocks down our T-shirts in a bid to keep cool – but autumn has tangibly arrived and there is an unmistakable chill in the air. Which is no bad thing, of course. We may be saying goodbye to the lido, vitamin D and a general sense of ease and happiness for the year, but we are welcoming a raft of clothing and fabrics newly at our disposal. And anyway, how many men feel wholly comfortable wearing shorts, safe in the knowledge they don’t look ever so slightly like a schoolboy?

Lastly, at a time of year when the meteorological system is unpredictable at best and layers are more necessary than ever, you might be thinking about what you have to put said layers in should you take them off.
