THE JOURNAL

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. And one thing you don’t want to think too much about is your clothes. But also, the warmer temperatures might mean you’re wearing less of them. So, the pieces you do reach for will have to work hard, even if you don’t plan to.
Almost all men’s clothing can be separated into two categories: things you want and things you need. Underwear, you need. Crew-neck T-shirts and shorts, you need. But statement sunglasses from Jacques Marie Mage or a leather-trimmed TOM FORD weekend bag? Those you want. And that counts, too.
The trick is to build a wardrobe of pieces that somehow sits in the middle of the two camps – clothes that cover the basics but offer that little something extra. Here are 11 elite pieces we think every man should have right now.
01. The chore jacket
Talk about working hard, here’s an item of clothing that will go with just about anything. First worn by labourers in 19th-century France, it’s barely had a day off since. And while an example in a heavy-duty fabric such as denim or cotton drill will make you look like a grafter, a lighter piece will do the job better as layering for summer. Take the labour out of your hunt for the perfect chore jacket with a Consciously Crafted cotton-twill number by Portuguese Flannel or a cotton-canvas example by Drake’s.
02. The sunglasses

We’ve written a full guide on how to pick the right sunglasses for you, so with enough options, the choice should be staring you in the face. However, there are certain styles that will work for anyone. And, in this summer of status sunglasses, there are pairs that really stand out. Jacques Marie Mage has a pair of aviators elevated to 60,000ft while Brunello Cucinelli Eyewear presents square frames that make for great all-rounders.
03. The overshirt
We wouldn’t go as far as saying you’re complicated, but multi-faceted, certainly. Deep. Three-dimensional at the very least. You’re a man of many layers, and the topper-most of those this season should probably be an overshirt. It’s the perfect piece for flapping in a coastal breeze or holding off a chill as the sun goes down. From a corduroy overshirt by Barena to a lighter linen one by Sunspel. And even if the weather doesn’t know what it is doing, at least you know what you are.
04. The short-sleeved shirt

When it comes to shirts, casual can mean relaxed, but it certainly shouldn’t be careless. Which is to say that something that looks thrown on doesn’t have to be literally thrown on. In short, rethink your short-sleeved shirt. From low-key plain designs through to eye-catching patterns, in cotton blends and laid-back linen, take this staple up a notch with brands such as NN07, LOEWE and Corridor.
05. The T-shirt
First issued by the US Navy, coined by F Scott Fitzgerald and catapulted into cultural significance by Marlon Brando, the humble T-shirt has become one of the core tenets of a man’s wardrobe (read more on its history here). But everyday shouldn’t mean humdrum. Indeed, the tee might be plain, but the fabric, fit and even colour (Zegna, Auralee and Onia can help here) can elevate a basic. Or say it with your chest and opt for a print or logo (see CELINE).
06. The tote bag

In the current era of the men’s bag, a tatty old promo tote won’t do. And for guys about town, there are a few options for day-to-day use – or even a weekend getaway. These pieces from Polo Ralph Lauren and TOM FORD will take you, and your stuff, far.
07. The shorts
Whether you can wear shorts to the office or not isn’t our call (although, if you want our opinion, read on here). The length of said shorts is also another story. What we can say for certain is that a few good pairs should see you through the season – as well as your vacation. From a jaunty pattern by God’s True Cashmere to low-key linen by James Perse, these have (some of) your legs covered.
08. The linen trousers

There will be times when you can’t wear shorts, but also selvedge denim can be a bit much in the dog days of summer. This is when linen trousers come into play. Made from flax, linen is a sustainable material that’s noted for its breeziness. Sure, it might pick up a few creases but lean into this and make it part of its effortless appeal. Going for a straight-leg fit by Folk or a drawstring waist by Frescobol Carioca will only add to the nonchalant vibe.
09. The loafers
Penny loafers are always right on the money. “Recent iterations with slimmer profiles, almond-toe shapes and additional character details, such as ruching or elevated materials, have allowed them to exist equally as a casual everyday style to pair with jeans and a T-shirt, as well as a more interesting formal option,” says Joss Long, MR PORTER’s Buying Manager. On site, you’ll find everything from classics by Edward Green and George Cleverley to footwear for those who like to walk (comfortably) on the wild side by Acne Studios and LOEWE.
10. The suit

Whether you have to wear one every day or you’ve been invited to a wedding or formal event, a suit has the potential to be the most reliable piece in your wardrobe. When it comes to staying cool in the heat, linen is the business – either as a classic unlined two-piece in a pale shade or a navy blazer that can be broken up with pleated trousers. Don’t sleep on patterns to inject a touch of character to your tailoring game. And look to our in-house brand, Mr P., for some of the best tailoring out there.
11. The sneakers
The go-to shoe for many of us, although everyone has their own preference when it comes to brands and styles. Do you want something with sporting pedigree or designer je ne sais quoi? For some, Brunello Cucinelli has the low-key sneaker sewn up, while adidas Originals has put in the hard miles when it comes to the retro sportswear front. Either way, a discreet pair means you won’t put a foot wrong.
