THE JOURNAL

So, here we are. Rather close to the finish line, isn’t it? By which we mean, this is usually the point in December when you start to remember all the people you’ve forgotten. The names that somehow have slipped off the gift list. It’s also the point at which you often realise you’re missing one crucial item in the stocking line-up. In short, a time when you realise there are just a few more bits and bobs you need. And fast. The first piece of advice here is: don’t panic. Depending on where you live, you’ve still got time to order from MR PORTER and receive your big white bag before the big day (check our Christmas delivery times here). To help you make these last-minute decisions quickly, we thought it appropriate to draw your attention to the items below, all of which can be yours (and then someone else’s) for a relatively modest outlay.
The gloves

The function of all gloves is the same: to keep your hands warm. But that doesn’t mean all gloves are equal. This particular pair, from British heritage brand Dents, combines the sharp stylishness of brown leather with a cosy cashmere lining, which makes them as tactile as they are aesthetically pleasing. And if anyone – in particular, whoever receives them – asks: yes, they’re handsewn.
The scarf

We like a long scarf at MR PORTER because, if you’re going to have something, why not have a lot of it? This is the thinking behind this example from our in-house label Mr P., which is not only prodigious in length, but satisfyingly hefty, thanks to its thick-ribbed knit, and wonderfully soft and fuzzy, thanks to the mohair fibres woven into its yarn. You might think we would charge extra for all this, but no. On the contrary, you’ll find this one of the most attractively priced scarves in our current selection. Look closely and you’ll see we’ve thrown in an extra colour for free.
The book

Think how wonderful it might be if someone you care about spends a bit of time on Christmas Day not staring at their phone or the television, but immersing themselves in the impeccably tasteful world of one of the 20th century’s most iconic furniture designers. Now, think how you might make this happen. Think carefully.
The body oil

Body oil is not like milk or bread or shampoo. That is, you don’t automatically add it to your weekly Ocado shop, do you? This is why it makes a particularly good gift, especially when it’s presented by such a theatrical brand as Buly 1803. What we mean is, this product is very much a treat – the fragrance is called Antique Damask Rose, for goodness’ sake – as is the experience of massaging oneself post-shower with an uplifting exotic scent. Surely, you know someone who deserves such a treat.
The pens

Anyone who’s seen The Wolf Of Wall Street will know that, if we can’t sell you a pen, we’re never going to make it in the world of high-stakes financial scams. So the pressure is on here, because we’re talking about not one, but three pens, or rather, two pens and one pencil. The pedigree of Caran D’Ache should speak for itself. The iconic brand has been the world’s pre-eminent supplier of writing and drawing materials since it was founded in Geneva in 1915. This particular set, which comprises an exceptional fountain pen, a ballpoint pen and a mechanical pencil, is the perfect gift for any man with creative urges or, we suppose, who just likes fantastic pens. So, did we do it?
The notebook

Many writers swear by the practice of keeping a notebook, a physical notebook that is. They find the act of jotting down thoughts and ideas creatively stimulating. Whether you buy into this idea or not, you have to admit that few notebooks are more touchingly detailed than this festive-feeling example from Montblanc, embellished with golden decals of Mr Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved character Le Petit Prince. Give it to someone with an adventurous spirit and hope that some of Mr Saint-Exupéry’s restless creativity rubs off on them.
The tableware

Not only a tasteful and acceptable gift, this espresso cup and saucer set from Café Kitsuné will allow the recipient to imagine briefly on Christmas morning that they are not sitting slumped on the sofa, but hot-footing it around the stylish Marais district of Paris, where the brand has its very own café. Buy them two and they might even let you join in.
The wallet

No one ever has any money left after Christmas, but the days of plenty will come once again, and every man will need something in which to store, at the very least, a maxed-out credit card. This timelessly styled and quietly branded wallet from Il Bussetto has room for eight such items, as well as two bill sleeves, should he be the kind of jet-setting person who’s likely to carry multiple currencies. What’s more, it’s a gift that will keep on giving, thanks to the way the vegetable-tanned leather will age and patinate beautifully as the years march on.
The socks

Novelty socks are all well and good, but the trouble is their lifespan is limited. Yes, there are those who will proudly don Santa-bedecked socks well into January, but they’re in the minority. For everyone else on your nice list, opt for a less eccentric style in a festive colour scheme that can still reasonably be worn all year-round. This cosy pair from new brand Thunders Love is made from recycled red yarns and is just the sort of thing you should be looking for.
The body lotion

The brainchild of Mr Patrick Munsters, who is also the founder of minimalist menswear brand Salle Privée, Marie-Stella-Maris was established as a mineral water brand with a social purpose. Inspired by the UN’s recognition in 2010 of access to drinking water and sanitation as a basic human right, the company pledged to donate a slice of the profits from every bottle sold to clean water projects around the world. Since 2011, it has raised more than a million euros and has also branched out into a range of grooming and beauty products, including this peppery body lotion. It’s a gift you can really feel good about giving.
