THE JOURNAL

Santa, if you’re reading: here’s what the MR PORTER team really, really hope to unwrap on Christmas morning.
Last week, the MR PORTER team offered up their Christmas wish lists. From headphones to GoPros, from candles to books about cabins, it was so popular we’ve decided to do it all again this week. So whether you’re still on the hunt for the perfect gift for that very discerning (read: picky) person in your life or simply haven’t started yet, the MR PORTER team are here to help with some #giftinspo.

Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men, that’s what I want for Christmas. But if that’s not forthcoming – and a glance at the newspapers would suggest that it probably isn’t – then I’ll settle for these charming salt and pepper pots from Asprey of Bond Street instead. Both of the little chicken-egg hybrids have been crafted from sterling silver; in a wonderfully extravagant solution to the problem of salt corrosion, the salt shaker has then been coated in 24-carat gold. You certainly cannot accuse Asprey of doing things by halves. As to the question of whether or not anyone out there loves me enough to drop in excess of £1,000 on my present, that remains to be seen – but I’ve taken the step of providing a couple of more affordable alternatives, just in case – a Thom Browne Fair Isle scarf and a graphic beanie from Raf Simons. How’s that for goodwill?

My apartment has been somewhat overrun with baby paraphernalia of late and Christmas promises another deluge of garish toys and plastic tat. So I need to redress the balance with some tasteful, masculine things such as this Sonic Editions framed print of Mr Michael Jordan, mid-dunk, which will not set off a bleeping nursery rhyme when it’s pressed; a chess set whose pieces will doubtless double as teething pacifiers; and some Frederic Malle L’eau D’Hiver because it smells a damn sight better than the regurgitated sweet potato on my shoulder. Also, while I'm fond of Dr Seuss’s body of work with a bottle at bedtime, Mr David Coggins’ entertaining compendium of sartorial advice and musings, Men And Style, is more my speed.

With gifts, it’s the thought that counts, and this year, I’ve thought ahead. So when everyone else is consumed with – and consuming during – Christmas, I’ll be daydreaming about what comes next. You see, to fill that depressing end of December lull, I’ve booked a flight to Cape Town, South Africa, where it will be the middle of summer. That’s why I hope Santa will be bringing me a pair of comfortable but smart NN07 drawstring trousers for the flight, and some Perricone DM Omega-3 Supplements to help prep my skin for the beach at Camp’s Bay – as well as a sturdy Fabbrica Pelletterie Milano suitcase to pack the rest of my essentials in. (OK, so I haven’t thought of everything…)

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without receiving a new winter scarf. My eyes are on this Brunello Cucinelli cashmere checked one. It’s fine enough not to be too warm, or too itchy, and will look chic teamed with a camel or grey coat. If someone’s feeling especially generous, then I wouldn’t say no to an IWC Schaffhausen Portofino 42mm stainless steel and alligator chronograph watch. This is a classic, handsome design that would make me happy, and on time, for decades to come. My grandmother used to drink whisky and smoke cigars (like a female Sir Winston Churchill) and so the spirit has always had a warm place in my heart. I like the mix of tradition and modernity in the design of this Linley Trafalgar crystal and rosewood decanter.

I spent last Christmas at home with my family in Italy and ended up having to wear a sweater that my grandma had knitted for me – picture a murky green Fair Isle knit, where the snowflakes look like pondweed. Not very MR PORTER. This year, however, I will be in London between Christmas and New Year and I plan to smarten up a bit, starting with this slim-fit wool herringbone jacket from Acne. I would also like a pair of white Common Project sneakers and a red Ami beanie to complete the look. Most of all, I want a T 701 Leica Compact Camera to share selfies of my new look with my grandma. Buon Natale!

There will be no heavy knits and cashmere socks on my list this Christmas, thank you very much. As an avid sun worshipper, I’m off to Rio for New Year to top up my vitamin D. As it’s the tropics, I will need this Frescobol Carioca wooden bat and ball set for Ipanema beach. Also, some new Orlebar Brown swim shorts, which have been my go-to for years. Finally, this Assouline In The Spirit Of Rio hardcover book, to plan my trip with (and to look good on my coffee table when I come home a shade darker).

So, this clearly isn’t a “Christmas sweater” on the basis there is neither Fair Isle pattern, reindeer or snowmen, but it’s as festive as I’m willing to go. Grinchy? Probably, but hey – I just really like the stripes. With a bit of luck someone (ahem, my wife) will spot it on my MR PORTER Wish List. I would also like a new wallet, something sleek and black like this Prada card-holder, and this book about Mr David Bowie, so I’m not staring at a TV the whole day.
