From Mr Donald Glover to Mr Benedict Cumberbatch – the sharpest celebrities this month.

May, May… Now what was it that happened in May again? What is this “Markle sparkle” everybody is talking about, and how might one get oneself a piece of it? Don’t ask the MR PORTER team. We were busy preparing for the launch of our Luxury Watch Guide. Dare we call it the one Must-See Event of summer 2018? Yes, we dare. Meanwhile, unbelievably, it seems that the world kept turning as usual – films premiered, parties unfurled and people stood in front of boards with logos on them to have their photos taken. In short, it seems, there is no pop cultural phenomenon seismic enough to shake the On The Town set off their A game. Scroll down to see who (beyond members of the British royal family and their close friends and celebrity associates) proffered the most dashing and daring outfits of last month.

Actor, painter and model Mr Miles McMillan always scrubs up very well. Perhaps it’s because he is tall and slim with an enviably tousled head of hair. Perhaps it is the influence of the various powerful crystals he surrounds himself with in the $3.2m NoHo apartment that he lives in with his husband, Mr Zachary Quinto. (You can thank Architectural Digest for that particular titbit of information, by the way.) Either way, this is a good example of impeccable evening dressing with just a touch of rebellion. The suit is slim and cut perfectly, particularly at the cropped sleeves and ankles, which makes it contrast neatly with the studded Valentino shoes.

Beige and brown’s foremost champion was at it again at the Cannes Film Festival. Luckily for him, this kind of effortlessly light summer tailoring never gets old, particularly when matched with a crumpled, open-necked shirt in another neutral shade. The whole thing reminds us a little bit of the advice we recently doled out in our “Seven Ways To Look Good In Neutrals” piece. Perhaps he read it.

The Italian football manager, currently with the national team, here proves that a navy suit can work in summer, too. This lightweight linen-blend example looks both effortless and professional, especially when paired with that blindingly white shirt. Just looking at it makes us feel that little bit cooler.

Imagine the consternation of poor Mr Sasha Trautvein’s mother when he came home with the words “Wake Up” tattooed on his face. Then imagine her pleasant surprise when, thanks to this and other daring style statements, he became an Instagram muse, international model and living, walking barometer of where style is at the moment, a status exemplified by this particular combination of dad sneakers, baggy trousers and bomber jacket. Parenthood, clearly, is a confusing business.

Mr Benedict Cumberbatch’s latest role is that of Patrick Melrose, the drug-addled, semi-autobiographical alter-ego of author Mr Edward St Aubyn and namesake of the new television series Patrick Melrose, a segment of which is set in New York City. That explains the cab, but what about the outfit? You don’t need much context to appreciate this. A navy suit and brown shoes is a classic combination that never fails, and this broad-shouldered cut is particularly flattering on the long and slim Mr Cumberbatch.

The man of the moment has been wearing some very nice polo shirts this summer, and the example above is one of the finest. Red chinos can be a divisive trouser choice (they’re one of those things that have their own hate blog) but here the bold colour seems a perfectly natural way to pick out the red stripes across his chest.

The dad sneakers trend is clearly one that isn’t necessarily going to look all that good if you are, in fact, a dad, but here filmmaker Mr Wim Wenders proves that it can be carried off by an older gentleman. We like the unassuming, loose cut of his suit and the way he’s gone for a very dark colour to offset his less-than-tan complexion and light grey hair.

A man who is never knowingly underdressed, Mr Stefano Tonchi here does a wonderful job as a Prada poster boy while standing outside the brand’s glitzy Resort 2019 show in New York. The blue jacket is a rather bold piece, but he makes it work by pairing it with a sympathetically hued print (note the collar hanging rakishly over the lapels) and some brushed-cotton chinos in a warmer than usual beige.
