How To Carry Off A Silk Shirt

Words by Ms Kate Kelley

Three of the best printed pieces for SS17, from Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang and Gucci.

There’s something a little extravagant about the idea of a silk shirt. Of course, that can be intriguing or off-putting, depending on how Wildean a dresser you are. But this spring, it seems, such extravagances are allowed, even encouraged. Because the silk shirt is everywhere. There are bold florals and roaming animals at Gucci, Western-style embellishments at Etro, and piped bowling-style shirts at Lanvin. But our favourites are the short-sleeved camp-collar varieties – ideal for a stylish spring-wardrobe update. Thankfully, in this contemporary incarnation, you don’t actually need to be a dandy, playwright or nightclub owner to carry them off, thanks to their decidedly retro, thrift-store stylings. Scroll down to discover a few of our favourites, and how to wear them.

Marc Jacobs’ SS17 collection was inspired by a picture of Mr Keith Richards in 1974, and this black and white camp-collar shirt – much like The Rolling Stones guitarist today – comes “artfully distressed”. Avoid wearing it with anything red or leather, for fear of looking like the inside of a diner, and instead embrace the laidback rock’n’roll vibe with some jeans and these Golden Goose Deluxe Brand “Superstar” sneakers, designed exclusively for MR PORTER. They come beaten-up, which means you’ll be saved the worry of your first scuff, and can instead slip them on with reckless abandon, wherever you may be headed.

Fine print

If the idea of this trend still makes you feel a little dizzy, this is a slightly more sober option. Cut for an oversized fit, the shirt’s monochrome palette is reassuring calm. The subtle leopard print will pair with a variety of different trousers, but, as is often the case, black jeans are always a safe bet. Keep things casual, and play up the rock-star feel, with a lightly distressed FRAME pair.

Red alert

If you’re the kind of man who’s ready to really display your sartorial flair, and aren’t afraid of a bit (okay, quite a lot) of colour, then this is the shirt for you. While it might initially seem incredibly bold, the above Gucci shirt, in one of the house’s signature retro prints, combines bright poppy red with a neutral tone – which means the palette is actually rather, well, palatable, and can be used as a bold flash of colour in an otherwise muted outfit. Once again, black jeans are an ideal pairing, but you can tone it down further – and go for a bit of a Mr Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet-feel – by wearing it open over a wonderfully minimal tee from Maison Margiela.
