The best streetstyle from the menswear shows this season.
Underneath the immaculately-groomed surface of every men’s fashion week lurks a struggle for style supremacy – both on and off the catwalk. The AW18 menswear shows, which descended on Milan this week, were no exception: with the world’s designers, buyers, models, stylists, photographers, professional Instagram influencers, and, yes – even press duking it out. This year, the city’s streets teemed with bold, simple tailoring and considered layering, while the requisite smattering of streetwear made a welcome appearance, too. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the heavyweight looks on offer.
Turn it Up

When you combine slicked-back hair with a double-breasted suit and fresh shave, there’s always a danger that everything gets a little too “Patrick Bateman” for comfort. The right thing to do, therefore, is keep your collar and jacket unbuttoned, apply a casual twist with turned up cuffs, and opt for a well-matched, but non-matching pair of trousers. The business cards are, presumably, secreted in a pocket somewhere.

Stay Neutral

While many people wait for the arrival of summer to welcome whites and neutrals back into their wardrobe, we see nothing wrong with lightening things up while the weather’s still a bit dark. It still pays to be smart, however: The oatmeal woollen outerwear here is saved from dullness by the brilliant white trousers. And, as this ensemble shows, the key to mastering winter neutrals is to stick with soft, warm fabrics – comfort is still key, after all.

Beat Winter Sun

There’s something pleasing about a sunny winter’s day – cold yet bright, and therefore the ideal opportunity to pair sunglasses with a woollen beanie. In this case, it’s also nice to see headwear that offers full ear coverage instead of the less useful shallow beanie. On-trend shearling, functional yet colour-matched outerwear and a casually perfect moustache are all nice-to-haves, too.

Balancing it Out

Some men appear to have spent countless hours planning, perfecting, and refining their outfits. Others seem to have thrown them together without sweating the details too much, while still achieving perfect harmony. The key to the latter approach is comfort – the more relaxed your ensemble makes you feel, the better you wear it. In this case, a burnt orange overcoat, cosy knitwear, casual (yet precisely turned up) jeans all work as one to create an informal yet accomplished whole.

Collar Some Cashmere

Investing in cashmere is one of those decisions that makes sense all year round – and especially in the depths of winter, when the material comes into its own as a base layer. This gentleman has opted to anchor his ensemble on a fine-knit rollneck cashmere sweater – on top of which sits a dark, warm mid-layer and the comfortable cocoon of a peak-lapel camel overcoat. When it comes to Instagram-friendly street style, it helps to hang around near walls that perfectly complement your outfit, too.
