TOM FORD: Five Essentials For A Stylish Wardrobe Foundation

At MR PORTER, we are firm believers in dressing with individuality and exploring our own style. But if we had to take anyone’s advice, it would certainly be Mr Tom Ford’s. The perfectionist, pristine-looking designer has said that “dressing well is a form of good manners”, and we couldn’t agree more. If our clothes are an extension of our personality, character and taste, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be showing the best version of ourselves on the outside, too.

It is impossible to talk about TOM FORD without mentioning its exquisite tailoring – the designer himself has a wardrobe full of jewel-toned velvet smoking jackets, brocade tuxedos and Savile Row-inspired suiting – but it’s worth paying attention to the brand’s more laid-back offering, too. So we’re going to do just that. Here are five picks from TOM FORD’s SS22 collection that’ll give your wardrobe a stylish foundation.

01.

The suede blouson

Few things are as timeless as a blouson jacket, particularly if it’s a TOM FORD blouson jacket. Taking cues from trucker styles (note the riveted snap fastenings) it’s made from butter-smooth Italian suede that comes in a rich yet versatile camel shade.

02.

The chunky cardigan

“I rarely wear knitwear,” says Ford. “This is simply a personal choice as most of the time I like the armour of a tailored jacket. I feel vulnerable in knitwear. However, on the weekends, in a casual situation in the country when I am with friends, I am often happy to feel more vulnerable and relaxed.” We have all had quite a bit of downtime and unexacting dress-code situations in the past couple of years, so we’d consider this chunky cardigan a wise investment.

03.

The everyday chinos

As we cautiously step out of the shadows of the pandemic, TOM FORD’s chinos might just provide the perfect transition from our now go-to sweats to pressed trousers. Click here for our pro tips on how to wear white (or ivory, in this case) without embarrassing yourself. You can thank us later.

04.

The running-inspired sneakers

These James sneakers sit on the slightly sportier side of things, but their adaptable palette of camel, beige and white means they’ll still work with everyday trousers. The retro football-inspired uppers get a futuristic twist courtesy of the stacked extended soles.

05.

The commute companion

A welcome (and more practical) alternative to a classic briefcase, this chocolate-brown backpack is the business for busy commutes and work trips alike. Oversized zips detail the outside, while the inside features a padded sleeve to keep your media kit secure.
