THE JOURNAL

From the guaranteed hit of vitamin D to the aroma of a deliciously salty ocean, there’s little to match the release of a summer holiday. And nothing gets us in the mood more than a packing list. But, while we may have our swim shorts, sunglasses and (hopefully) passports ready to go, warm-weather shoes can sometimes be an afterthought. Our Church’s brogues or high-top Converse won’t quite cut it on the sand or by the pool. Here, you will find a handful of appropriate footwear especially designed to keep you on point from the departure lounge to wherever your final destination might be.

The Hamptons-ready Sperry boat shoes

When it comes to boat shoes, Sperry is the OG. The company was founded in 1935 and its signature style is currently experiencing a renaissance thanks to its laid-back, East Coat preppy vibe. Supremely comfortable underfoot thanks to the rubber sole, these classic dark brown leather boat shoes can be worn any way you see fit. For us, though, it’s with a knitted, retro-looking polo shirt and a pair of razor-sharp linen shorts with deep pleats.

The signature TOM FORD tennis sneakers

Sometimes, you only need one pair of shoes for a holiday and that may well be the classic, all-white tennis sneaker. Options are endless these days but, in typical TOM FORD fashion, this one is decidedly more sophisticated than the rest of the crop thanks to the supple calves leather and extra-fine detailing. Complete the look by with a lightweight, tie-dye cashmere sweater beneath a crisp, selvedge denim jacket.

The going-to-Ibiza Officine Creative suede sandals

With serrated rubber soles which will ensure you hold a solid footing on everything from the dance floor of DC-10 to the cobbled streets of the Old Town, Officine Creative’s agora suede sandals are quite possibly the most louche option around this summer. With butter-soft suede uppers in a pastel-green hue, they’ll go with just about anything you can throw into your suitcase.

The laid-back leather Castañer espadrilles

There’s something about flip-flops that lack refinement. On the other hand, espadrilles, which are characterised by the braided jute sole, provide relaxed, holiday-mode elegance at its very best. The Catalonian brand Castañer makes some of the very finest and they don’t come much better than this full-grain leather option that gives you a dressy look with all the comfort. Pair with some bamboo-blended trousers cut on the roomy side, and a long-sleeve camp-collar shirt with a lived-in look.

The summer-in-the-city Yuketen suede clogs

If you haven’t already invested in a pair of clogs, consider this an urgent reminder to do so. With the current movement towards comfort over everything, they’re most certainly a thing – relaxed, easy-to-wear and require little thought. Yuketen proudly makes all its shoes in the US, and these suede clogs feature a silver-tone buckle that adds some needed detail. Step through streets with a cardigan and a pair of patchwork bandana-print shorts.
