Five Of The Best Sweatshirts Right Now

It might seem odd to be talking about sweatshirts in August. Traditionally, it’s the month most of us down tools and set off on holiday to some cloudless paradise where we’ll sport nothing but swimwear for two weeks. But with September just a month away, the time to begin prepping for a new style season is now. Which brings us back to the sweatshirt, an item that will bridge the gap between summer and autumn and have you all set for chillier weather when it arrives. These are five of our favourites.

The garment-dyed one
If you’re accustomed to the platonic ideal of the sweatshirt – grey marl, cotton-jersey, ribbed trims – you’re not going wrong. Classics are classics for good reason. Still, stepping outside your comfort zone every once in a while never hurts, which is where this sunny yellow example from our own label Mr P. comes in. Since it otherwise has all the trappings of your archetypal sweat, it makes it less of a jump for the colour-shy. What’s more, the garment-dying process gives it a wonderfully soft, lived-in, vintage vibe.

The tie-dye one
No, we’re still not done with tie-dye. And neither, it seems are you. Pieces such as our exclusive LOEWE x Paula’s Ibiza hoodie are flying off MR PORTER’s shelves. Perhaps it’s our longing for a summer that never was or maybe it’s just because colours are fun things to wear. Whatever the case, this standout example should satisfy your (sartorial) psychedelic cravings for, oh, a week at least.

The smart(ish) one
If anyone can elevate something ostensibly casual into something incredibly smart, it’s Orlebar Brown, the brand that made a name for itself turning that most carefree of garments – the swimming trunk – into a beach-to-bar-appropriate pair of tailored shorts. If a dressy sweatshirt sounds like an oxymoron, we need merely point you in the direction of this zip-up navy number. It’s the stealthy funnel neck that does it.

The luxe one
If you’re the type of man who can’t decide whether to buy a car or an item of casual clothing on any given day, this one’s for you. True, sweatshirts don’t need to be fancy, but it’s very nice when they are. One of the fanciest we’ve seen in a while comes our way from Brunello Cucinelli. It’s made of bonded cashmere and cotton and comes in the most refined colour on the spectrum bar none: camel.

The logo one
Serious question: when did the 2000s become retro? It’s a curious thing when a decade that still feels so fresh in the memory becomes fashionable again. And yet here we are, back once more in the time of diamanté-encrusted loungewear. Not everyone will look at this hoodie and immediately think it’s for them, but they’re missing a trick. From new brand Sorry In Advance, which is headed by 22-year-old skater and model Mr Evan Mock, it’s part of the debut collection, which celebrates Mr Mock’s homeland of Hawaii.
