By this point in the year, we’re assuming you’re well and truly done with 2015. All those mistakes, missed connections, disappointments and hangovers have been put behind you. Right? Unfortunately, we have one last bit of business to deal with concerning the past 12 months. It’s the MR PORTER team’s equivalent of the January tax return. The important matter in question? Announcing the best outfits we saw in December, a month during which, amid all the last-minute shopping, mince pie munching and familial infighting, you might have missed out on a few key style tips from the following On The Town frontrunners. After this, there’s no looking back, we promise.

One piece of advice we often omit whenever we explain how to wear a tuxedo is that it helps if you’re 6ft 4in, in impeccable shape and have a Nordic, vampiric look about you. Mr Alexander Skarsgård, who made his name in the late 2000s playing undead heart-throb Eric Northman in HBO’s True Blood, is the rare man who possesses all these qualities, so this kind of thing is a breeze for him. Even so, he deserves kudos for how incredibly sharp his tux looks in the image above. This can be attributed first to a perfect fit – note the sliver of shirt sleeve poking out beneath his jacket cuff and the way the arms and waist hug his figure without straining – but also to his choice of a shawl-lapel jacket, which always looks a little more suave, especially if you have a bit of length to you.

Mixing and matching patterns is one of the more risky decisions you can take when putting together a formal outfit, but it makes for a rather wonderful spectacle if you can pull it off, as Mexican actor and singer Mr Diego Boneta does here. Spotted at the 2015 GQ Men of the Year Awards, Mr Boneta is demonstrating some key tenets of the pattern game by keeping his colour palette simple (ie, predominantly blue) and avoiding clashes of geometry by deploying patterns of different type and scale. First, there are wide-spaced, horizontal pinstripes on his suit. Then there’s the micro-check shirt. And finally, a tie dotted with tiny blue crosses. The variation allows each pattern to breathe, while lending his outfit a bit of depth, rather than eccentricity.

He wasn’t even the slightest suggestion of a twinkle in his father’s eye in the 1970s, but rapper and actor Mr Donald Glover made an admirable stab at incorporating some of the decade’s style into his outfit for the GQ Men of the Year Awards. And it worked. We like the slightly looser cut of this suit, which seems dressed up, but nonchalantly so. And as we’ve remarked before, in Essential Wardrobe Tips From The Seventies, we’re always happy to see a jacket and turtleneck combo, particularly when the subtle shades of caramel and navy contrast as happily as they do here.

This outfit from the always well-dressed style influencer and model Mr Eric Rutherford is a wonderfully autumnal face-off between brown, blue and black. The key to making sure something as simple as this works, in addition to being judicious about colour, is close attention to the fit of each garment. Note how Mr Rutherford has had his trousers neatly taken up and tapered to meet his Chelsea boots halfway. And how his coat sleeves sit perfectly at wrist level. Even his white T-shirt, though barely visible, is the right shape and size – it skims the neckline of his oatmeal sweater with the precision of a pocket square. Now that’s how you do casualwear.

There’s something pleasingly Star Wars-y about this multi-layered ensemble from Mr Jefferson Hack, the man behind such cult style publications as Dazed & Confused and AnOther Magazine. But that’s not to say it’s a look you would only wear a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. In fact, the oversized, soft-shouldered coat and belted cardigan (with tucked-in scarf) give an authoritative weight to Mr Hack’s long, slim frame, while the top-heavy silhouette brings to mind post-punk style icons Echo & The Bunnymen as much as it does Obi-Wan Kenobi. May the force be with him.

Is there a cooler restaurateur than Mr Michael Chow? Probably not. This is a man who has counted Messrs Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ed Ruscha among his admirers. A man who fits out all his Mr Chow restaurants with antique Lalique glass doors. He’s also recently been made a governor of Mr Eli Broad’s stupendous new art museum The Broad in Los Angeles. And here he is at Art Basel Miami in December, standing in front of an exhibit but also looking like one in his wonderfully slouchy suit. He’s achieved this nonchalant effect in his tailoring (reminiscent of his friend and fellow round-glasses wearer Mr David Hockney) by the simple feat of buttoning his generously cut double-breasted jacket close to the lapel. It makes it look like a cutting-edge designer piece, but, in fact, this is just good, old-fashioned style.

Mr Pierre Casiraghi, seventh in line to the throne of Monaco and seen here with his new wife Ms Beatrice Borromeo, can now also boast the distinction of being one of December 2015’s most stylish men. We’re sure he’s over the moon. In this image, taken in Milan last month, he’s paired his navy suit (conservative, timeless) with a grey quilted blazer (surprising, sporty) rather than an overcoat or chesterfield. It’s both an unexpected move and a great example of how to keep warm this winter with a modicum of elegance. How’s that for taking the aristocracy kicking and screaming into 2016?

We at MR PORTER have seen a lot of Mr Eddie Redmayne looking splendid on red carpets across the globe, furrowing his own particular sartorial path in a series of brightly coloured and/or checked suits. We would never imply that this sort of thing has reached saturation point – on the contrary, we hope he really brings it on for 2016 – but it’s nonetheless refreshing to see him in casual mode, as above. Dressed like an extra from Happy Days in a neat-fitting varsity jacket, slim chinos and new-looking Converse sneakers, Mr Redmayne proves he can look as sharp off-duty as he does on the job. The Globe-Trotter cases, presumably, are stuffed full of more jazzy tailoring.
