On your marks, get set… The Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 is landing on MR PORTER.

If you’re into sneakers – you like them, you buy them, you might even wear them – then what we’re about to say will be both welcome and regrettable. We’ll start with the good news. On 27 July, we will be stocking the Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0 sneaker. The bad news? We probably don’t need to say this, but it won’t be in stock for very long. Because, for the uninitiated, this sneaker is, well, a little bit special. The story starts back in 2012 when Nike collaborated with the American artist Mr Tom Sachs for a very (very) limited NikeCraft capsule collection, launched alongside his Space Program: Mars exhibit, which imagined a Mars landing. There was a reversible trench, a hoodie and a tote, but most importantly, there was the Mars Yard sneaker, inspired by space-age materials and Mr Sachs’ interactions with notable NASA mechanical engineers such as Mr Tommaso Rivellini. In his description of the sneaker when it launched, Mr Sachs paid homage to such scientists: “These shoes are built to support the bodies of the strongest minds in the aerospace industry.”

As you might expect, the 2.0 is a new and improved version of the well-loved original. According to Nike, we can expect “a material update informed by Sachs’ long-term trial of the original that revealed an unknown”. In reality, this means a more breathable “polyester warp-knit tricot mesh” upper, stronger stitching on the famous red straps and an outsole that, originally protruding for use in the desert-like Mars conditions, has been inverted for more urban-friendly wear. So, set your iCals, and set them early. You have been warned.
