Why Wacko Maria Is The Hell-Raiser’s Choice

The Japanese brand making controversial graphic pieces we want now.

There’s a pleasing sense of devil-may-care fun to the wares of Japanese brand Wacko Maria, launched in 2005 by ex-Japan and J-League football players Messrs Keiji Ishizuka and Atsuhiko Mori. Perhaps that’s because the whole thing started out as a bar, Rock Steady, in Tokyo’s trendy Meguro quarter (the same address now serves as Wacko Maria’s showroom). Perhaps its because of the duo’s shared passions: music; drinks; hats. Whatever the reason, the brand’s designs, best described as rockabilly-meets-streetwear, stand out from the pack for their mixture of stylish, minimal cuts and graphics and slogans that can only be described as… well, rather controversial. We can safely say that we have never, until now, offered a garment on MR PORTER emblazoned with the words “Satan’s Soul”. But when it all looks this good, who are we to resist? Scroll down for our favourite pieces from this season’s Wacko Maria collection, and how to wear them.

The trend for souvenir jackets that we saw last spring has paved the way for a whole host of embellished, embroidered and vintage-inspired garments. But this has long been a stock-in-trade for Wacko Maria, as evidenced by the masterful ease with it throws together a garment like the above zip-up jacket, emblazoned with an intricately embroidered crow motif on the back. In case you’re wondering, the Japanese characters on the front and back merely say “Paradise Tokyo” – the name of the brand’s flagship store – not “stupid tourist” or anything like that. Resting assured in that knowledge, wear the jacket with a pair of Wacko Maria’s exceedingly crisp “Zack” twill trousers.

The Rolling Stones may have been the most famous men to declare their “Sympathy for the Devil”, but Wacko Maria has, this season, gone one better and made an attractive overshirt to illustrate their (apparent) affinity with the dark one. The item in question, above, is rendered in a sturdy cotton twill and is emblazoned on both front and back with the brand’s trademark graphic lettering proclaiming the shirt’s point of origin (The “Devils Workshop”). Seeing as the slogans themselves are quite a statement, you might want to tone down the rest of the outfit – a washed black T-shirt will do nicely.

This embroidered varsity jacket is reversible, so essentially you get two looks for the price of one. Turn it one way, and you’re sporting a black jacket with blue sleeves, featuring an embroidered pair of cranes, their beaks suspiciously in the air, on the back. Turn it the other way and you get all black, with a tiger. This grey hoodie, in a soft loopback grey marl cotton will, however, go with both, and almost anything else in your wardrobe. Wear it underneath the jacket and enjoy the extra warmth as you stalk around town looking for all those “Guilty Parties” Wacko Maria seems to be all about.
