THE JOURNAL

The products to ensure you’re at your peak – and not looking too peaky – on the slopes this ski season.
Unless you are particularly strict with your skincare routine or have an unhealthy relationship with your moisturiser, it’s likely that your wash bag is not the first thing you pack when going skiing. But, much like choosing the right snow boots and skis, a good grooming kit is essential when hitting the slopes. True, a good SPF or deodorant are not going to prevent any broken bones, but they’ll certainly make you look (and smell) more acceptable when it’s time to glug some glühwein. With than in mind – and now that we’re sliding deep into ski-season – here’s a fool-proof packing list of stuff to take to the slopes.
THE SPF
It might be sub-zero up in the mountains, but that doesn’t mean you don’t still need sun protection. Because the snow reflects UV radiation back onto your face, before you don your ski boots and salopettes your first port of call should be a facial SPF. This one from Erno Laszlo will protect and moisturise skin without blocking pores, and will prevent an unsightly goggle-tan. Stick it in your backpack for top-ups throughout the day.
THE MOISTURISER
For some heavy-duty moisturising protection to stop your skin turning to sandpaper while you slalom, slap on a bit of this environmental protection lotion from The Lost Explorer before you hit the slopes. Its long-lasting ingredients are designed to form a strong barrier between you and the elements, whether that’s from windchill as you slide down the mountains with grace, or from a face full of frozen powder when you don’t.
THE LIP BALM
The combination of frozen air and blustery wind can have your lips looking like a couple of dehydrated worms in next to no time, so lip balm is always a good idea, and there’s no excuse not to slip one into your ski jacket. This one from Dr. Barbara Sturm will keep your lips protected from the elements and soothe any soreness.
THE NIGHTTIME TREATMENT
A combination of windburn, blasts of snow and the subsequent warmth of an après-ski pub do not a handsome face make. Keep your skin calm, nourished and ready for another day with this skin infusion cream from Sisley – Paris, which works to intensely hydrate and soothe dull and tired skin.
THE DEODORANT
With all the equipment to remember when skiing or snowboarding, it’s easy to forget one of the most important things: deodorant. Riding the snow down a mountain is thirsty work, and a few hours in, your base layers will be sweatier than you expect. Keep things under control with this natural eucalyptus deodorant by Malin + Goetz that neutralises odour and will leave you smelling as fresh as an alpine breeze.
