MR PORTER Style Council member Mr Andrew Roberts recommends his favourite restaurant.
To be really in the know about a restaurant, it’s shrewd to pick the brain of a regular who’s familiar with the place. As part of our series exploring some of the world’s best destinations with members of the MR PORTER Style Council, we asked Mr Andrew Roberts, director of communications for Bentley Motors, for some insider knowledge about Hix Oyster & Fish House. One of the finest seafood restaurants in Lyme Regis, Hix offers views of the Dorset coast in an airy yet intimate setting. But what should you order, when should you go and where should you sit? Find out below.

What do you love about Hix Oyster & Fish House?
Lyme Regis is a special place with many happy memories for me as a child, but as an adult it now has just as much appeal with many interesting and excellent independent restaurants. At the top sits Hix Oyster & Fish House. It has the best view of the famous Cobb and Jurassic Coast and it has the freshest fish and seafood imaginable.
Where’s the best seat in the house?
On a beautiful summer’s day, outside is a must to take full advantage of the view. During the evening the tables at the back overlooking Lyme Bay are the ones to ask for.
What’s the best dish?
Locally sourced lobster and shellfish are delicious. Lyme Bay is well known for its scallops and if in season, definitely go for the Wye Valley asparagus. Last time I was there, I had the Torbay huss curry and it was incredible.
What do you order to drink?
On arrival, you must try the local artisan Somerset cider. If you are feeling more metropolitan, the English negroni is fabulous and the Lyme Bay brut reserve sparkling wine is a wonderful way to start the evening. You can stick with local drinks for the meal with award-winning Lyme Bay Sandbar white wine. Zesty and fresh.
When is the best time to go?
This is an all-year-round restaurant. Summer can be idyllic, but winter storms and inclement weather make this a very cosy restaurant with sufficient local ambience to give it natural warmth and charm.
Who do you take?
Someone special or family. Lyme is a place to unwind and enjoy a charm sadly lost to many British seaside towns. This is not a business restaurant – ditch the suit and get out the espadrilles and Persol shades.
How do we get a table?
Plan in advance, but it is open all day and the best advice is to drop by on the way to the beach and chat to the staff. They are friendly and want to help.
Can we make a weekend of it?
Absolutely. Hix has a charming B&B just up the road, within walking distance, so it is perfect for a long weekend away. You can even bring the dog with you, depending on which room you are staying in.
