Brighter Days Are Coming: Seven Ways To Kick Off Your Spring Style

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, there’s light at the end of the tunnel: winter is slowly coming to an end, and the first signs of spring are just around the corner. That means longer and warmer days (albeit with unpredictable weather) and lighter layers. Crucially, it also means that once you’ve stowed away your down-filled jacket, winter boots and chunky knitwear, you can finally fill your closets with fresh new duds.

It’s a good opportunity to shake off the ennui that comes with dressing for the cold. So we travelled to sunny Seville, Spain, with seven looks and a photographer to help you get the upcoming trans-seasonal months right.

One of the best pieces of advice we can give for a spring wardrobe refresh is to pick layers that will have you prepped and ready for whatever weather turn the upcoming months have in store. When shopping for knits, opt for something lightweight, and perhaps something you can adjust, such as Casablanca’s zip-up sweater – wear it solo or layer it over a thermal tee when it gets chilly.

The end of winter needn’t mean the end of sweats; after all, they’re still mainstays of our off-duty wardrobes. But in brighter months, we’d advise adding some colour and print in that department – like, for example JW Anderson’s jaunty tomato-printed zip-up. Stuck for styling tips? Go for matching fleeces or colour-coordinated sweats over neutral layers.

Double denim was all the rage on the SS23 catwalks, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give the newly re-emerged trend a go yourself. Try a medium wash, such as OrSlow’s jeans, or break up the utilitarian fabric with Sacai’s nylon-trimmed jacket. For accessories? Dress your look down with Marni’s clogs or elevate it with a pair of leather loafers, throwing on a couple of pieces of jewellery to finish it off.

When temperatures dip, we firmly believe in dressing smarter – as in making wiser sartorial choices, rather than just wearing more clothes. So, mastering the art of layering is a priority to give your wardrobe a quick springtime boost. Choose fuzzy, substantial knits – Camp High’s striped mohair style is ideal – and go for lighter fabrics in the outerwear department. Canvas, nylon, denim, jersey and suede are all good options. Marni’s floral blouson, designed in collaboration with Carhartt WIP, is at the top of our Wish List.

After months spent dressing for the cold, spring is finally the time to dress for yourself. And while keeping your wardrobe well-stocked with neutral and black layers may just be the best way to take winter head-on, as the season turns, things in the sartorial spectrum get more fun. Out with uninteresting stripes and the 50 shades of grey that have taken over for the past months, in with colours and lively patterns. Once you’ve found what works for you – could it be BODE’s Jacquard sweater, or perhaps the brand’s bucket hat? – don’t be afraid to mix things up.

Come rain or shine, a coat is still expected to be the outermost layer of your outfit in spring. And as such, for better or for worse, it will also be the first item of clothing to catch the eye, so choosing something that makes you feel good and put-together is paramount here. Your best bet is a coat that pairs well with both smart and casual; and with one as well-tailored and luxurious as Nili Lotan’s, it almost doesn’t matter what you’re wearing beneath it.

Going from April showers to short-sleeves weather in a matter of hours can have you in a pickle, so keeping your sartorial arsenal as adaptable as possible will save you time, energy and a few trips to the dry cleaners. A vest or a gilet, the transitional staples par excellence, will come in handy. Go for a neutral style over a bold layer (see Marine Serre’s signature moon-print T-shirt) or play with volume via Bottega Veneta’s intrecciato. And don’t forget a bag to stow your umbrella – JW Anderson’s Bumper is one of our favourites.
